About
Putting on a Hazmat Suit refers to a multi-pane exploitable webcomic that depicts a man putting on a biohazard safety suit and entering a dangerous or toxic area. Users usually change the name of the room the man is entering to reflect an opinion or a controversial topic of conversation.
Origin
On April 2nd, 2017, the webcomic DaneMen published the six-panel comic entitled “Toxic Talk.” In the comic, a man wanders a gallery of potential comic ideas. Some of the ones the man encounters criticize and parody United States President Donald Trump. By panel three, the man can be seen putting on a hazmat suit before entering a room called “Comment Section,” referencing the online response to DaneMen Trump comics, as well as the internet cliche “don’t read the comments.”
About two weeks later, Redditor Marx_Harpo posted the comic on the /r/comics subreddit. The post received more than 5,700 points (94% upvoted) and 90 comments in about two years (shown below).
Spread
Later that month, on April 25th, 2017, Redditor orlando2542 posted a photoshopped version of the comics that shows the man walking into a room for “competitive” video game playing and entering the room “Team Chat” with the hazmat suit on. The post received more than 12,000 points (88% upvoted) and 660 comments in one year.
Later that year, Redditor seek_ posted the image with the man entering the room /r/furry_irl (shown below, center). The post received more than 360 points (97% upvoted).
About two years after the original post, Reddit MegaBmin posted a variation in which the man is entering the room Windows registry. The post received more than 21,000 points (95% upvoted) and 580 comments in 24 hours (shown below, right).
