Michael Crocker is a college student from California. He was driving home from Alabama with his four-month-old yellow lab puppy, Bella, when he became exhausted; he decided to keep going.

“We get to Flagstaff [Arizona] and I fell asleep behind the wheel,” Michael told Inside Edition.

His car veered off of the road, hit a sign, and then rolled back onto the road.

Michael’s friend from college was driving behind him. He went to check on Michael, and he found that Michael was unconscious and Bella was gone.

When Michael woke up, he “started freaking out about her.” He had injuries of his own to worry about — he lost his thumb and suffered severe burns — but he couldn’t stop thinking about his sweet pup.

But as he began his recovery journey, he never gave up hope of finding Bella. Rescue groups posted flyers about her and hoped for the best. Almost two weeks passed, and there was still no sign of the Lab mix.

Finally, a local rescue group found Bella in the Arizona desert. The pup’s leash had become tied in a bush. She had no food or water, and she was down to only 9 pounds.

“It appears she had tried to get out repeatedly, because her leash was tightly wound around a bush,” a rescue volunteer explained.

Bella and Michael are now together once again. Michael says he hopes to make the rest of Bella’s life as easy as possible.

“I definitely want to make her feel like she’ll never have to spend a night alone again,” Michael said.
