Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt might be blunt during his stand-up routines, but after being extremely vocal about the grief he suffered when he lost his spouse, Michelle McNamara, he’s acquired a reputation for being a bit of an internet-softy.
And once again on Twitter, Oswalt has proven that he’s one off the kindest guys in Hollywood. It all began when Oswalt, a critic of President Donald Trump, responded to one of his many tweets. Twitter user Michael Beatty replied to Oswalt’s response with: “I just realized why I was so happy you died in Blade Trinity!” and “And you shoot basketball ike [sic] the sawed off little man you are.”
Rather than fire back, Oswalt took a deeper look at Beatty’s Twitter history and came across a tweet asking for donations for a series of medical problems. So, he decided to share the link with his followers.
“Aw, man,” Patton wrote. “This dude just attacked me on Twitter and I joked back but then I looked at his timeline and he’s in a LOT of trouble health-wise. I’d be pissed off too. He’s been dealt some shitty cards — let’s deal him some good ones. Click and donate — just like I’m about to.”
Beatty’s GoFundMe page sates that in December, he was rushed to hospital with sepsis and coded twice while he was in ER. The Vietnam veteran, who says he is living on retirement money, spent two weeks in the hospital and was eventually found to have developed diabetic ketoacidosis as a result of the infection.
Oswalt donated $2000 himself toward the man’s $5000 goal, and his followers quickly pushed the amount donated to over $31,000 as of the time of writing.
The generosity seems to have changed Beatty’s opinion of the actor. “You have humbled me to the point where I can barely compose my words,” Beatty wrote in a tweet. “You have caused me to take pause and reflect on how harmful words from my mouth could result in such an outpouring. Thank you for this and I will pass this on to my cousin who needs help. A cascade.”
He also thanked those who had donated in a separate tweet.
“I want to thank everyone who came to my aid with generous outpourings,” Beatty wrote. “And also to @pattonoswalt without whom I would not be the recipient of so much love and support. I’m not a man who ever cries but I had to wait to send this. And to quote Stuart on Big Bang ‘meat tonight.’
And of course, Patton responded with his usual form of humor.
This is just too humbling.
