‘Those numbers don’t seem to add up’: Tesla driver says car lied about charge amount

While Tesla drivers may enjoy the technology and ease of charging their vehicles provide, they’ve also reported a host of issues utilizing their vehicles in everyday life.

For example, one Tesla Cybertruck owner went viral after claiming their vehicle broke down four times after just a few months of ownership. Another claimed that his car’s touchscreen broke after sending the vehicle through a car wash, and a further user alleged that their Tesla’s self-driving feature almost drove them into a cop car.

While some issues with Tesla vehicles can be ascribed to driver error, others are directly the fault of the manufacturer. According to a December 2023 article from Reuters, Tesla knew that some parts on its vehicles were flawed or prone to failure; still, they often blamed the drivers for the issue rather than the car itself.

Now, another Tesla driver has sparked discussion after citing an issue with the car’s expected range.

How Accurate is a Tesla’s Expected Range?

In a video with over 4.8 million views as of Saturday, TikTok user and YouTuber James Charles (@jamescharleslol) explains why he “f***ing hate[s] Tesla.”

According to Charles, his car claimed to have 165 miles of range. On his current journey, there are only 131 miles left to his destination. However, while it may initially appear that Charles has enough miles to reach where he’s going, the car claims that this isn’t actually the case.

“There’s 34 miles that should be left in the f***ing battery by the time we arrive home,” he explains. “Well, nope, that’s funny. It says we need to charge to reach the destination—because if we don’t, we’re going to get home with negative 9%.”

This discrepancy visibly infuriates Charles.

“Maybe I’m f***ing missing something, but those numbers don’t seem to add up,” he states. “And clearly, the car is able to calculate what the actual charge is. So why are you telling me that I have 30 extra miles?”

What Can Affect a Tesla’s Range?

According to Tesla, the expected range of a car can be impacted by a host of factors. While the vehicle may say that a car has a certain number of miles left, the range can be affected by high driving speeds, cold temperatures, stop-and-go traffic, and more.

Other driver decisions can also influence range. For example, Car and Driver performed a test in which they sought to determine how using the air conditioning in a Tesla affected the range of the car.

Depending on what climate control settings were used, they found the car’s expected range to drop anywhere between 34 and 61 miles.

This may explain Charles’ experience, as he writes in a comment responding to whether he had the A/C on, “Of course I f***ing do it’s hot outside.”

What the Internet Says

Commenters were quick to share their own Tesla gripes or other reasons why the expected range might be different from what the car actually requires.

“It’s not that he’s upset on how long he has left- he’s mad it isn’t calculating right,” explained a user. “The car should account for AC.”

“Over time batteries degrade and so does their capacity to hold the charge accurately. Since your Tesla is older it requires more to work to do less,” shared another.

“You need to consider traffic light wait times,” noted a third.

The Pacers Forced A Game 7 Back In New York With The Latest Blowout In This Series

ESPN

For the third straight game in the Pacers-Knicks series, the home team picked up a blowout win, as Indiana protected homecourt in Game 6 to the tune of a 116-103 win (that wasn’t as close as that final score indicates), sending things back to the Garden for a Game 7 on Sunday.

It looked like we might finally get a competitive game, as the two teams traded punches and leads through the first quarter and a half, with Indiana playing much more inspired team ball at home and Deuce McBride providing a big lift off the bench for New York.

However, as the second quarter wound to a close, the Pacers ripped off a big run to take control of the game with a 10-point lead going into the halftime break.

Tyrese Haliburton got going in the third quarter, as his home-road splits continue to be maddening, and the Pacers extended their lead further.

The Knicks would trim the lead down to 13 going to the fourth and seemed like they might make one last push to get things close, but the Pacers quickly shut down those hopes, pushing their lead out to 20 and ending the threat.

It was a balanced attack from the Pacers, but Pascal Siakam led the way with 25 points and 7 rebounds on the night.

In support, the Pacers saw Tyrese Haliburton (15 points, 9 assists), Myles Turner (17 points, 8 rebounds), Andrew Nembhard (15 points, six assists), TJ McConnell (15 points), and Obi Toppin (11 points) all get into double figures. What is maybe most encouraging for Indiana is they didn’t win thanks to a red-hot shooting night (34.6 percent from three), but by imposing their will physically and taking the fight to the Knicks — something New York did to them in Game 6.

The Knicks looked like a tired, worn down team once again on the road, with Josh Hart being the latest Knick to pick up an injury with an abdominal injury that limited him to 31 minutes and had him in clear pain on the bench. McBride was the bright spot offensively, with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but it was otherwise a grind for New York to get much of anything going on offense. Jalen Brunson finished with 31 points but shot just 11-of-26 from the field, while Donte DiVincenzo added 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. As a team, New York shot just 43.9 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent from the free throw line, as they just could not get into a rhythm with their shot from anywhere.

Now the series shifts back to New York and the same question persists: Can a road team finally get a win in this series? The first three games were all tight, but since then it’s been blowout after blowout, and the Pacers will have to prove they can get this kind of effort, intensity, and focus to travel to New York on Sunday afternoon for Game 7 at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Watch Chinese restaurant staff's delight when Pentatonix singer speaks in perfect Mandarin

Even though the world has seemingly shrunk due to transportation and technology connecting people like never before, we still regularly encounter major barriers when it comes to language. There are around 7,000 officially known languages in the world, and most people don’t speak more than one or two. If you’ve ever tried to communicate with someone when neither of you speak each other’s language, you know how frustrating it can be.

But the reverse is also true. When you’re in another country and unexpectedly encounter someone who speaks your language, it’s a refreshing and delightful surprise. Americans are pretty familiar with that experience, as it’s not uncommon to find people who speak English in other countries, but that’s not the case for everyone.

It’s especially not the case for Chinese people living in the U.S., where only around 1% of people speak Chinese at home, and those numbers are split between Mandarin, Cantonese and other dialects. Finding an American who comfortably speaks Mandarin is a rarity, which is why a video of employees of a Chinese restaurant reacting to a customer doing just that has gone viral.

That customer is musician Kevin Olusola, most well known as one of the vocalists in the a cappella group Pentatonix. Olusola was picking up some food at Okome Asian Grill in his home state of Kentucky when he surprised the crew by responding to them in Mandarin, and their reaction was sheer surprise and delight.

Watch:

Olusola shared in the comments that it meant a lot to him and filled his heart when the woman said, “You’re one of us.”

He joked in the video about being born and raised in Beijing, but he actually only lived there and studied Chinese for a year and a half. But as he said, he loved the language and put his “whole heart” into studying it. And apparently, however he learned it was incredibly effective.

“As a native Chinese speaker I need people to realize how amazing this is: not only is he speaking Chinese fluently and pretty quickly, he’s also slurring certain words/speaking in a certain accent, using sentence patterns, and using phrases that’s specific to Beijing: he is literally in every sense speaking like a Beijing locals, it’s so cool to see 😍” shared one commenter.

Another commenter explained what he said after “The food is” in the video: “Se Xiang Wei Ju Quan, literally ‘colour,’ ‘aroma,’ ‘taste,’ ‘complete,’ the first three are the three basic requirements of well made food in the philosophy of Chinese cooking, so essentially it means ‘Your food is amazing, it looks good, smells good and tastes good.'”

Another person wrote, “I’ve been watching videos like this on YouTube..it’s always so interesting. Once that language barrier comes down we are so much alike.” That comment hit home for Olusola and he responded to it with another video.

“Once language barriers go down you realize that we’re all alike—that statement resonates so deeply with me,” he said. “I remember living in Beijing and hanging out with my Chinese friends, speaking to them in Chinese, and once the language barrier was down I realized that they had the same hopes, dreams and fears that I had…I think that’s why empathy and understanding are so embedded in language learning.”

Empathy and understanding really are the key to shared humanity. Ideally, one day we will have a universal language that we all learn to speak in addition to our native tongues, so that we won’t have to navigate those language barriers that artificially separate us. But in the meantime, learning another culture’s language can be a bridge that unites people in moments of delight like this one.

Where Is Paul John Knowles Now? Casanova Killer

One of his last victims was a woman named Barbara Mabee Abel. Before letting her go he told her that he loved her.

Former U.S. Assistant Attorney Hale Almond got a glimpse of Paul John Knowles’ taped confessions sometime before they were destroyed in a flood at the Federal Courthouse in Macon, Ga., in 2004. He likened them to being a diary of sorts, except they recounted tales of murder in gruesome detail. According to Almond, Knowles included how he killed people and even which weapons he used. On occasion, Knowles revealed where the bodies were.

Knowles would later be dubbed the Casanova Killer due to his movie star good looks. Unfortunately he wasn’t promising his victims romance, just death. Over the span of four months in 1974, Knowles went on a killing spree that ended in the deaths of 18 people. For reasons we’ll never know, he let one person go. Where is Paul John Knowles now, and what happened to his survivor? Here’s what we know.

Where is Paul John Knowles now?

On July 26, 1974, Knowles was in a Jacksonville, Fla., jail after being arrested for a bar fight, per The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers. He picked the lock and escaped. Hours later he was at the home of 65-year-old Alice Curtis. Desperate for money and transportation, Knowles tied her up and gagged her, then escaped using her car. Curtis ended up choking to death on the gag and Knowles stuck around long enough for police to recognize the stolen car. His face was soon splashed across the local television stations.

Over the course of four months, Knowles went on a killing spree that didn’t consist of any patterns. Sometimes he murdered people out of necessity because he was looking for money or another car. Other times he appeared to take someone’s life on a whim, like he did to “Jane Doe,” a hitchhiker he picked up while heading north.

Finally on Nov. 16, 1974, a police officer recognized a stolen car Knowles was driving. The officer pulled him over but Knowles was faster than the young cop, and was able to take him hostage. Switching to the patrol car, Knowles pulled over a man by the name of James Meyer and took him hostage as well in Meyer’s vehicle. This proved to be difficult, so Knowles tied them to a tree in Pulaski County, Ga., and shot them both in the head.

Hours later he busted through a police roadblock but this ended in Knowles crashing into a tree. After a brief foot chase which involved both dogs and helicopters, Knowles was captured by an armed civilian on Nov. 17, 1974. While in custody Knowles claimed he murdered 35 people but authorities could only verify 18. The next day while being transferred to a maximum security prison, he grabbed a sheriff’s revolver but Knowles was shot and killed by Ron Angel, an FBI agent on hand for the transfer.

Barbara Mabee Abel is the only known survivor of the Casanova Killer.

Days before he was captured, Knowled broke into the home of 31-year-old Barbara Mabee Abel. She lived with her son and twin sister Beverly, who had cerebral palsy. She told People that the day she was kidnapped, she had an eerie feeling. It was Nov. 14, 1974, and she picked up her son Dale from school. When she got home, she heard a voice say, “Don’t turn around,” but she did.

Knowles was pointing a sawed off shotgun at her as Abel’s son ran back into the kitchen to let her know something was wrong with Beverly. She was bound and gagged in her room, and the material shoved in Beverly’s mouth was covered in blood. Realizing that her sister was naked, Abel screamed, “Did you rape her?” Laughing, Knowles said he tried then told Abel he was going to take her son. “Don’t take my son,” she begged. “Take me instead.” So, he did.

Bending over the bed, Abel whispered to her sister that everything was going to be OK. She left with Knowles and got into her car. While driving, Abel decided to be nice to him in the hopes that he wouldn’t kill her. “I told him he looked like Robert Redford,” said Abel. Soon they stopped at a motel in Fort Pierce, Fla. While there, he repeatedly raped her. At one point they ate at a restaurant together where Abel continued to pretend she liked him.

Back at the motel he assaulted her again and left to make a call, but this time he forgot to take the key with him. Knowles had locked himself out and upon returning realized he couldn’t get back in. Instead of making a scene he told Abel through the door that he was leaving. The last thing he said was, “I love you.” Two days later, he was dead.
