Mike Aquilina’s friend, a turtle breeder, told him about a tiny baby turtle who needed a home. Mike was willing to step up and care for her… but nothing prepared him for the bond he’d create with this one-of-a-kind reptile.

The adorable Pinkbelly Sideneck turtle is not only albino, but she was also born with her heart beating outside her chest — a condition so rare among animals that the veterinary community has yet to give it a medical name. In humans, the rare condition is known as “ectopia cordis.” According to Wikipedia, it’s a “congenital malformation in which the heart is abnormally located either partially or totally outside of the thorax.”

Shortly after Mike brought the turtle into his New Jersey home, her presence improved his quality of life — hence the reason he named her “Hope.”

“Hope has changed my life for the better in such a short amount of time,” he told Caters News Agency. “I keep her water extra clean, give her a basking area that is as soft as possible and handle her as little as possible.”

Because she is so delicate and her deformity must be kept clean at all times, Hope must be separated from other turtles.

But as you’re about to see, she’s equally fearless as she is fragile, and she continues to survive despite the odds stacked against her.

A Denver homeowner has become so fed up with her neighbors’ behavior that she decided to resort to drastic measures.

She says her neighbors consistently fail to clean up after their dogs, leaving poop all over her lawn. It became such a frequent happening that she responded by posting a large ‘For Sale’ sign, covered with a note typed on a piece of bright orange paper, right in the center of her fenceless yard for all to see.

The sign quickly caught the attention and acknowledgement from her neighbors.

The left side of the sign, though filled with foul language, sends a reasonable message about the importance of cleaning up after one’s pet.

The right half of the sign, however, lists some pretty terrifying consequences. The author suggests physically hurting dogs who leave poop on her lawn using poisoned meatballs and/or paw-crushing traps.

Many neighbors were outraged when they saw the sign, calling it a clear and direct threat to their pets. “I understand the first half, there is a huge issue with people picking up their dog poop in this neighborhood, but they don’t deserve to have their animals threatened like that.”

Because of the harshness of the orange sign, her neighbors are using some revenge tactics of their own.

‘Payitaht Abdülhamid’ garners great interest abroad

Lately, Turkish series have gained large audiences abroad. One particularly popular series nowadays is Turkish state channel TRT’s show “Payitaht Abdülhamid,” which is broadcast via TV, the internet and through media abroad.

The director of the series, Emre Konuk spoke to Anadolu Agency (AA) about the show.

Konuk noted that he was very pleased with the interest shown in the series abroad and said that they are working at a very busy pace and then watch the series on Friday. “We don’t have much idea about what’s going on in the world. We understand from the interest shown to our actors and actresses when they go abroad and the messages we receive that the series is not just loved on our land, but we created something that has spread to the world and is successful. We are naturally very proud,” said Konuk.

He also noted that the shooting is very enjoyable as well and added, “‘Payitaht Abdülhamid’ is an important project for history. We are commemorating the life of a very important person. Sultan Abdülhamid was one of the most important sultans of the Ottoman Empire. His time was a very rough period. The end of the Ottoman Empire. He postponed the collapse of the Ottoman Empire for 30 years and maybe, built the foundation of today’s Turkey. Therefore, it is a project I enjoy. While we do not learn history from such series, they increase attention for our reading history, so we can say that we have reached our goal.”

‘This is our second home’

Bülent İnal, the leading actor of the series who plays Sultan Abdülhamid noted that they visited a film festival in Qatar’s capital Doha and received great reactions. “We were not aware that ‘Payitaht Abdülhamid’ was so eagerly watched in Doha. They have been translating and publishing it on the same day over YouTube or other social media. They welcomed us with great love. We get the same attention and love from other Arab countries over social media. The number of fans of Payitaht is increasing day by day,” said İnal. He added that they continue their job with the same seriousness and the same love.

İnal noted that the series is going on at full speed and said, “It is pleasant. We are like a family now. This is our second home. We are here every day.”

Real history told to new generation

Bahadır Yenişehirlioğlu, who plays “Tahsin Pasha” in the series, noted that “Payitaht Abdülhamid” was not an ordinary series, and they are not doing something for popular culture.

He added that while they work hard, everyone from the actors and producers to anyone who contributed to the series is motivated that “Payitaht Abdülhamid” transcend the borders of Turkey and get great feedback from the world.

“We know that we are watched with great interest despite all the limitations, in all geographies the Grand Ottoman Empire has contacted. We are trying to create a consciousness. It is a very important series since it shows the global powers of the past and who the exploiters were, how they survived until today and that the philosophy still continues even though the states and individuals have changed. My claim as a writer is that it is not possible for a generation that does not know its history, is not aware of its history and one that has not internalized it, to create a future.

“Turkey has believed in a history that was imposed upon it. The Arab world tried to understand us through the history imposed by the British. But the contacts we have established in these geographies show that we are actually delivering our own history, people, culture, religion and history to these geographies. We are telling our real history to younger generations and that is what is important. We are telling what someone, who was defamed for years, was actually doing; what his ideas were along with how he was concerned with the whole of the Islamic geography; how he was alongside the oppressed and what kind of internal and external forces he had to deal with.”

Yenişehirlioğlu also added that the series has a lot to do with today. “It may be perceived as if we are not doing a series about today’s world. Yet this is not the case. What happened yesterday coincides with what happened today. We are expressing a historical consciousness. We are teaching our own history to our generation with high quality cinematography, script and shooting. Being a part of this and interpreting a character that is loved, trusted and can be leaned on is very pleasing for me as well,” added Yenişehirlioğlu.

Yenişehirlioğlu noted that they will continue without any break in season three and that it looks like they will also be shooting a fourth season as well.

‘It sheds light on the present’

Playing Egyptian Khedive Fuat, Hakan Yufkacıgil noted that the excitement increases a little more each week. “It is going pretty good for me as an actor. We are interacting with the audience. Their feedback is great. They support us greatly. I am playing a wicked character in the project and I’m researching about his past. This nation has had a very difficult time; they had to deal with traitors. While ‘Payitaht’ does not have such a mission, we are observing these from the outside. I believe we are shining a light on today. Our series is going very well. We take pleasure in working,” said Yufkacıgil.

He also underlined the interest in the series abroad and added that they are seeing great support from abroad and that people are under the influence of the series.

“Payitaht Abdülhamid” is screened on Fridays on TRT 1.

On a clear and sunny Houston afternoon, Kelyn and Isaiah set up a photo shoot for their daughter’s first birthday. They thought they’d found the perfect setting: a picturesque walking trail in the Broadacres community, often frequented by local families and photographers.

Kelyn and Isaiah sat their daughter down on a pink, fluffy blanket, alongside a simple setup of birthday balloons. But in the middle of the photo shoot, a woman stopped her car and approached the family, claiming the photo shoot was blocking the entire walkway.

The parents pulled out their phone and started recording, capturing the moment the angered woman smacked their balloons, dragged the pink blanket and slapped the phone out of Isaiah’s hand. The baby girl cried and screamed in the background.

The woman has been identified as Franci Neely, a Houston socialite. She, along with other neighbors from the Broadacres community, say there are too many photo shoots in their neighborhood and that they cause damage to the property. Neighbors have been posting signs to ban these so-called “disruptive” photo shoots.

The City of Houston, however, says the esplanade and surrounding streets are public property.

Franci Neely released the following statement to ABC13: “The Broadacres Homeowners Association Invests lots of money paying to maintain the trees, grass and walkways in our neighborhood. The high volume of commercial photography damages the property that Broadacres HOA pays to maintain and interferes with dog walkers and others who merely want to walk under the pretty trees. We asked the commercial photographers to please stop.

I am very sorry that I got upset on late Saturday afternoon. Putting it in context, however: I saw three commercial photography shoots in one block at the same time, something that happens frequently. When I explained the situation to the first and third groups, they were respectful. The couple whose photo shoot obstructed the walkway was not. It’s hard to remain composed when confronted by shouted threats of lawsuits and false, inflammatory accusations.”

After this story went public, a very similar confrontation was reported. In spring 2018, a Houston dad says his daughters and their friends were taking prom photos along the same walking trail. In footage he recorded on his cell phone, the same woman angrily confronted the group of teens.

Plague Inc. is a real-time strategy game in which the player creates and evolves a deadly pathogen in the hopes of infecting the world with a plague. After its release on mobile devices, a console version of the game was released on Steam in 2015. The game became a subject of memes in meme communities on Reddit in 2018.

History

Plague Inc. was created and published by Ndemic Creations. Inspired by the 2008 Flash game Pandemic II by Dark Realm Studios, it was released for iOS on May 26th, 2012 and for Android on October 4th of the same year. The game uses an epidemic model which players must utilize to maximize the effect of their pathogen.

The game proved popular, having been downloaded over 85 million times, and in 2015, a console version of the game, Plague Inc. Evolved, was released on Windows, Mac OSx, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.

Reception

The game was well-received. On top of being a commercial success, it received a score of 80/100 on Metacritic. Critics praised the game’s gameplay, strategy elements, and humor in spite of what some called a bare-bones presentation. Plague Inc.: Evolved also received an 80/100 on Metacritic. It was a runner up in IGN’s 2012 awards for “Best Strategy Game.”

Online Presence

Plague Inc. continues to have a popular online community. A subreddit for the game has over 2,900 subscribers. The game also has over 132,000 likes on Facebook.

Poisoned Water

Poisoned Water refers to a series of jokes that grew popular on Reddit’s /r/me_irl subreddit in late October of 2018. A user made several posts in which he offered the subreddit a poisoned glass of water and that a cure to the poison was being worked on in Greenland, which itself is a reference to the video game Plague, Inc.

On October 28th, 2018, Redditor kubapoke made several posts creating a narrative where water offered in the first post was poisoned (examples shown below).

kubapoke continued the narrative over several other posts, concluding with a post saying a cure for the poisoned water was being developed in Greenland (shown below, right). The reference to Greenland is itself a reference to the game Plague Inc., in which a player attempts to affect the world with a deadly pathogen. Greenland is difficult to infect in the game as it is a sparsely populated island with limited sea communication.

Greenland and Madagascar

Since the release of the game, Greenland and Madagascar have gained notoriety among players as locations which are hardest to successfully infect due to limited sea communication routes leading to the countries. For example, a post on /r/memes referencing the game gained over 22,000 points (shown below, top left). An inquiry about these jokes was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop on November 5th, 2018.

Anti-Vaxxers Petition

On July 23rd, 2018, Plague Inc. received a free Royal Update which included a “Science Denial” scenario. In the scenario, exiled science experts work on a cure in a “Super Science” utopia established in a random country, while the rest of the world relies on ineffective alternative medicines.

People around the world have stopped believing in science, medicine and even diseases. One country decides to offer scientists sanctuary and from here they hope to save humanity from itself! Can you wipe them out in time?

On February 17th, Change.org user Eduard Gabrian created a petition calling to add anti-vaxxers as a buff in Plague Inc. On the next day, the user posted a screenshot of the petition along with a link to it to /r/memes subreddit. The post gained over 680 upvotes in one two days.

On the same day, Redditor jojuju1611 posted an edited screenshot of the petition to /r/me_irl subreddit, where it gained over 18,600 upvotes in two days. In the following days, the edited screenshot was posted on numerous subreddits, including /r/PewdiepieSubmissions (33,900 upvotes), /r/dank_meme (30,600 upvotes) and /r/teenagers (5,100 upvotes).

On February 19th, Redditor itsbryandude made a post on /r/gaming subreddit pointing out that a similar gaming mode already existed in the game.

Milo the puppy was born with an incredibly rare condition: his front paws were upside-down. The condition made it difficult for him to live life normally. But thankfully, he’s now getting the treatment that he needs.

Milo’s breeders surrendered him to an animal rescue organization at just 5 weeks old. Unfortunately, this ultra-cute hound was unable to walk because of his upside-down paws.

“We evaluated Milo with our state-of-the-art CT scanner and identified his problem to be congenital dislocation of both elbows,” animal surgeon and professor Dr. Erik Clary told Pix 11. “With both elbows out of joint, Milo was unable to walk. Try as he may, the best he could do was an inefficient and seemingly uncomfortable ‘army crawl.’”

Earlier this month, Milo underwent life-changing corrective surgery at Oklahoma State University’s Veterinary Medical Hospital. Dr. Clary said Milo’s “complicated” surgery took about three to three-and-a-half hours. It was all thanks to the rescue group, Oliver & Friends Farm Rescue and Sanctuary.

“For each of his elbows, we had to go into the joint and restore the alignment. Then we placed a pin across the joint to keep it straight while his growing bones continue to take shape and his body lays down the internal scar tissue that will be needed for long-term stability,” the surgeon explained.

Milo also had to wear a splint for three weeks post-surgery to allow his front legs to heal. After that, if his elbows stay in place for the next three weeks, he’ll likely be able to walk normally one day.

“He’s loud, and he’s opinionated but he’s also so sweet and cuddly,” rescuer Jennie Hays said. “He’s just a great little puppy.”

Congratulations are in order for Darren Criss and Mia Swier, who just tied the knot after eight years of dating.

The Glee alum and star of The Assassination of Gianni Versace married his college sweetheart on February 16, 2019.

Darren and Mia announced their engagement on January 19, 2018. Darren shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Mia and I have had seven and a half years of fun, wacky, wonderful, CRAZY adventures together. And I’m happy to announce that we’re kicking those adventures up a notch. We’re goin for it. To boldly go where neither of us have gone before. Engage.”

The two met while in college at the University of Michigan (back before Darren Criss was a household name). Since his college days, Darren has become a huge star.

He performed on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He also starred as Blaine Anderson on Glee between 2010 and 2015.

Most recently, Darren starred as spree killer Andrew Cunanan on American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. This role won him two major awards: a Golden Globe Award for best actor in a miniseries or television film and an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie. In his Golden Globe Award acceptance speech, Darren gave a sweet shout-out to his longtime love.

Their wedding was a star-studded event, with many other Glee cast members making appearances!
