Parenting isn’t an easy job, but we have to give ourselves credit for getting it done. These days more than ever, there are countless examples of what parenting should look like. Some people can curate a picture-perfect family lifestyle and more power to them. Those of us who have learned through the experience know that some of the best moments aren’t necessarily the ones we’d want to broadcast.
A lot of people approach parenting with the idea that parents should always be in control. Many parenting authorities recommend authoritative parenting rather than authoritarian. The idea, however, is that parents have all the control.
In this unperfect world, we all slip up. It’s not easy to always be on, and sometimes you just don’t want to be. Kids often have more pull than we give them credit for. The moments that kids take the reigns result in some of the best parenting moments. Thankfully, these unapologetic parents have shared their stories and shown that some pretty incredible things can happen, even when you’re not totally in control.
Alex Pulido, a single mom from Atwater, California, began her day like any other. On a brisk February morning, she warmed up the car for her two kids before heading to work.
Alex’s 5-year-old son had just fallen asleep in the backseat of the car when she went to grab her 8-year-old daughter from inside their home.
By the time she returned outside just moments later, a carjacker had stolen her vehicle — with the little boy still asleep in the back.
Alex frantically took off on foot in a blacked-out panic, but the driver had already sped off.
Police officers began a desperate search and after about 20 minutes, they found the car parked nearby… a sign of hope that they’d find the child inside.
The boy, however, was nowhere to be found.
Nearly an hour had passed since the carjacking and subsequent abduction. Then, a good Samaritan noticed a little boy on the roadside, barefoot and dragging his own car seat behind him…
Now, Alex is sharing her warning with the public and admits she still has nightmares about those 55 harrowing minutes.
In April 2013, Master Deputy Shane Robbins lost his life in the line of duty. Shane was a 15-year veteran with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.
Shane and his daughter, Carlie, had formed an inseparable bond. And just as she and her family marked the fifth anniversary of his death, Carlie was getting ready for prom — knowing her father wouldn’t be there to see her off on the most important night of her adolescence.
But Carlie came up with a plan. Before leaving for prom, she wanted to make one very special stop at Shane’s grave.
Seated at his graveside, Carlie set up a heartfelt photoshoot so she and her dad could spend a few minutes together before prom, just the two of them.
In some photos, she wore her glittering dress. In others, she wore his old uniform.
“They document that my dad saw me for my prom for the first time,” Carlie told CBS.

Terri and Mike Hawthorn fell in love when they were in high school. They’ve been married for nearly 40 years and have four biological kids. As teenagers, they probably never expected they’d one day have so many children, but as their kids grew older, they felt an undeniable calling to bring more kids into their home — kids who needed love and warmth more than anything in the world.
Terri and Mike began taking in foster children. In just five years, they helped a whopping 80 children.
They never expected adoption to be in the cards… but again, that familiar calling returned.
When the couple fostered a little boy named Korgen, they fell so in love with him that they knew he was meant to be their son forever. And when they learned he a little newborn sister, they decided to adopt them both.
According to Adoptuskids.org, “Research suggests that siblings placed together experience lower risk of failed placements, fewer moves, and many emotional benefits. Siblings placed together often feel more secure and are able to help each other adjust to their new family and community.”
Right around the time they adopted Korgen and his sister, Terri and Mike met began fostering yet another set of siblings. At first, there were only three.
Then they discovered the set of three had two more siblings. And then another. “And then it just kept on growing from there…”
This group of brave and resilient siblings were born into lives of abuse, neglect, and malnourishment. They constantly worried where their next meal would come from. Some of them had never even slept in a bed before. Perhaps the most difficult part of all was the fact they were split apart and repeatedly shuffled from home-to-home for three years before entering the Hawthorns’ lives.

Japan ends ‘failed’ coronavirus quarantine on cruise ship | DW News
More than 74,000 people have now been infected with the coronavirus. Outside of China the biggest cluster of cases has been aboard the cruise ship the Diamond Princess, which has been in quarantine in the Japanese port of Yokohama for two weeks. Hundreds of passengers who have tested negative for the virus have started leaving the ship and are returning to their home countries. The death toll from the coronavirus has now surpassed 2,000, and the virus has spread to more than 20 countries around the world on five continents.
