Giannis Antetokounmpo Is The 2019-20 NBA Defensive Player Of The Year

The NBA’s awards are getting doled out a bit differently this year. Instead of a huge award show following the conclusion of the year, the league is announcing them throughout the postseason. We already know that Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse is the 2019-20 Coach of the Year, and now, we know that the Defensive Player of the Year award will also go to someone in the Eastern Conference.

According to Chris Haynes and Vince Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, the award will go to Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks. The news was soon confirmed on TNT, as Antetokounmpo was joined by his entire team as head coach Mike Budenholzer announced the news and Brook Lopez handed him the trophy.

Antetokounmpo, the reigning league MVP and the favorite to be that award’s repeat winner, received 75 first-place votes. Anthony Davis, who got 12 first-place votes, came in second, while Rudy Gobert came in third.

His ability to guard all five positions, protect the rim, and generally impose his will on that end of the floor makes Antetokounmpo an obvious pick for the award. He joins Kevin Garnett, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson as the only players to win both the MVP and DPOY awards in their careers — and can join Olajuwon and Jordan in doing so in the same season should he earn a second-straight MVP award this year.

What’s the Controversy Surrounding His Tweets?

Comedian, singer, YouTuber, and Emmy nominee Randy Rainbow has recently apologized for some unsavory tweets that are threatening to derail everything he’s accomplished. The performer, who’s best known for his political parody videos on YouTube, has had dozens of his old tweets collected and neatly presented in a public Google Spreadsheet that logs his offensive messages all the way back to 2010.

Ranging from racism and transphobia to anti-Semitic and anti-Black tweets, the archival spreadsheet has caught the attention of many online activists and the blowback from Black, queer, and transgender Twitter users has been swift. Randy recently explained his side of the story, but before diving into his response, scroll down to better understand the controversy.

The backlash from Twitter was quick and decisive.

After the spreadsheet surfaced online, Twitter activists have been quick to call out Randy’s behavior. “I’m not cancelling Randy Rainbow, he did it himself,” user Mia Maria Macy tweeted, with screenshots of a number of Randy’s tweets. Another user, @robbedsettos, began a thread of all the tweets, until Randy started to delete the original posts.

Users were quick to denounce Randy’s behavior, and while some were surprised to discover their favorite YouTube parodist’s unfavorable jokes, others were not as shocked. “Randy Rainbow turning out to be a transphobic racist is so very 2020,” @writesloud said.

The response to Randy’s tweets got so heated that one Twitter user suggested that another recent internet sensation, Ziwe Fumudoh, could interview Randy on her infamous Instagram Live show. “Randy Rainbow could make for an iconic guest,” they tweeted at Ziwe.

Randy Rainbow’s apology following the controversy.

Randy remained pretty tight-lipped as the situation unfolded online but he finally sat down for an exclusive with famed LGBTQ publication The Advocate to explain his side of things. Randy, who is also gay and Jewish, apologized for his tweets and termed the material “completely offensive and insensitive” himself.

“I am incredibly sorry. I would never intentionally do anything to hurt anyone,” he told the magazine. “I am in no way a racist. I am in no way transphobic … There is not a racist or intolerant bone in my body.”

Randy explained that the unfortunate tweets were from a time when he was still finding his voice as a comedian. He feels that these older tweets aren’t a reflection of who he is today as he’s grown a lot since his first viral videos were released all the way back in 2010. “I learned … over the last decade, that there are things that you must be sensitive about. There are issues that I was not aware of back then. In 2010, we weren’t anywhere near where we are now … I continue to educate myself, I continue to listen and learn.”

Randy also said that “it’s been ‘determined’ that he’s being politically targeted and there’s an ongoing investigation.” While we don’t know the official source of this investigation, according to Randy, “it’s no coincidence that [this controversy is] happening in the midst of a very contentious election because I use my platform every day to speak truth to power … and expose truly intolerant and racist people.”

“There are nefarious people out there who want to silence me because they don’t like what I really have to say,” he continued. He never disavowed the old tweets, referring to them as “not skeletons in my closet [but] crappy jokes in my shoe box from a decade ago.” He urged those who were calling him out to “consider the source.”

“I am a comedian,” he concluded. “I’m not a politician. I’m not a political pundit. I’m not running for office … I’m a comedian. This scandal I’m going through might seem a little more scandalous to some because I now have this voice in the political world.”

Randy says he all he wants to do is “call out bigotry and racism … That’s how I want to use my platform. That’s what’s really in my heart.”

Viral Twitter Thread Exposes Rare Neopets Trading Ring

In a viral Twitter thread, one user shared the story of how an organized virtual pet-trading ring led them to be booted from Neopets. It’s the story of a 9-year-old “drunk on power,” and how a past operation to flip rare pets backfired before their eyes, coming to a head this week with the help of a massive 2012 data breach.

The Neopets leak

The thread begins with Everest (@everestpipkin), who did not respond to a request for comment, explaining that every so often, they check back on their old Neopets account to see if they can possibly salvage access to it. Neopets is a virtual community that allows users to own and care for fantasy pets online. Similarly to platforms like Club Penguin or Webkinz, the site contained minigames and was eventually marketed as physical memorabilia such as plush toys, stickers, jewelry, and other merchandise. While the website’s heyday has come and gone with the 2010s, Neopets is set to launch a rebooted mobile experience in the near future.

“Every few years I email Neopets support asking if they can help me log into my childhood account,” they began. “and (unsurprisingly, tiny team, millions of old accounts) I’ve never heard back.”

The user goes on to explain that they originally considered the Neopets account completely lost, being that it was linked to their dad’s long-gone America Online account in addition to having a fake birthday on file (in order to bypass age restrictions). It wasn’t until they recently had the idea of digging around for data breaches and security leaks from the site that the possibility of regaining access was restored.

A hack on Neopets occurred in 2012, before the site’s acquisition by its new ownership, Jumpstart, in 2014. According to one Reddit user’s Have I Been Pwn’d notification, the data leak included extensive user information with 27 million unique emails, passwords, IP addresses, names, and geographic locations made available in plain text. The information was found to be traded at auction and allegedly stemmed from breaches on the site that had occurred years prior.

In a statement addressing the leak on Facebook, Neopets confirmed that increased security measures were put into place on the site following the incident. The site’s management strongly recommended password changes for anyone who has not reset theirs since 2012 or uses a similar password on other accounts online.

It was this very vulnerability that Everest took advantage of by accessing leaked files and cross-referencing back to their own throwback credentials. They finally identified the password, only to find that someone had beat them to the punch and switched it out before they got the chance to retrieve their old trove of pets and virtual assets. No dice.

The Neopets ‘crime ring’

But, why do they care about accessing such an old account in the first place, nostalgia notwithstanding? Well, Everest in the viral thread confesses to a mind-boggling, potentially lucrative plot: They stopped using Neopets after their “organized crime ring” was taken down by the site, they say. Crime being: rare pet adoptions in exchange for virtual currency, and eventually PayPal compensation.

“Neopets had a ‘pound’ where you could drop unwanted pets for adoption,” they explained. “So me and party two would get on [AOL Instant Messenger], they’d buy some overpriced item in my shop, then I’d put the pet up for adoption, they’d search its name at the exact moment, adopt it, done.”

As for how they handled customizations, Everest details that the method came to fruition by way of Neopets’ “lab ray” treasure hunt. Once completed by assembling pieces of a map, users could access a button which would apply completely random color and pattern designs to the pet. They’d apparently take pets, zap them until they turned into something fit for profit, then make a new pet to replace them, and repeat the entire process.

Eventually, Everest staffed the operation through Neopets social guilds, a group system that had ranks, conditions, and an invite-only forum customized with HTML, where business logistics were to be handled. A portion of the profits was given to those on their team providing help. As the currency continued to add up and the group strengthened its influence, they explain that they resorted to burner accounts, babysitting forum users’ accounts, and recruiting Neopets operatives at school to sustain the hustle. That was satisfactory until the business outgrew itself and it was time to raise the stakes.

With the help of a little guesswork, they had allegedly found their way into an all-new account that did not belong to them. And like clockwork, they began using the account to bolster the original business. Finally, with time they worked up the strength to go through with a new customization zap on the intercepted account.

After successfully customizing on an all-new account, the operation was up and running at an even more blistering pace. “Over the course of 6 months, my guild /transformed/. We had a process. We had a hit list of accounts. We collated thousands of probable passwords… we grew exponentially.” As smoothly as the operation was going, Everest eventually turned control over to their second in command out of “boredom” and being “lonely at the top.”

By then it was 2002 and Everest was 11 years old, they said. Enter, PayPal.

That’s when things got ugly. After their general absence for nearly half a year, Everest’s new leadership had overrun the operation by their own accord, promoting new workers and establishing a rulebook and culture of their own independently. They ended up kicking Everest out.

“I had plenty of power on my own… I set up my first transfer using my personal shop, and it went – flawlessly. some small portion of all my accumulated Neopets empire turned into $10 USD in my unverified Paypal account,” they say, regarding the next steps after branching away from the guild. “Within a few weeks, I’d repeated the transfer dozens of times with different Neopians. I’d never seen so much money in my life.”

In response, their second in command took measures into her own hands, vilifying Everest and the entire original operation with the help of Neopets support. “… she took two and half years of internal conversations, forum posts, text documents, and AIM chats to Neopets support and got them to freeze every single account I had ever touched, including my Paypal account which I never successfully recovered,” they wrote.

By then, there was just one account left. An offshoot account that Everest had made at some point along the journey. One that they only used to play games and host other pets.

But despite the work to restore their login, as of press time Everest remains locked out. The viral tweetstorm has been faved almost 7,000 times.

What Has Melania Trump Done as the First Lady? Let’s Have a Look

When the U.S. holds elections on Nov. 3, citizens will be deciding more than simply who will be sitting in the Oval Office — we’ll also be choosing the first lady! Of course, the current first lady — Melania Trump — has held that title for nearly four years now. And what a four years it has been!

What has Melania Trump done as first lady?

We know the broad strokes of what a president does (and/or should do) throughout their presidency, but the role of the first lady isn’t quite as formally defined. There is no founding document that describes the duties of the president’s spouse. Rather, the many first ladies in the White House have each shaped their own role to suit them.

Some first ladies are more involved than others. Before Eleanor Roosevelt held the title starting in 1933, first ladies were focused primarily on domesticity and hostessing. Eleanor largely redefined the role when she became the first lady, remaining incredibly active during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 12 years as commander-in-chief. Since then, first ladies have run the gamut, striking a balance between hosting duties and championing causes they are passionate about.

In the case of Melania Trump, one of her first official “duties” was redecorating the Oval Office — it became a tradition in the late 20th century for each new administration to redecorate the office according to the president’s personal tastes. Typically, redecoration efforts are coordinated by the first lady’s office.

Melania also refreshed the Red, Green, and Blue Rooms, and designed a new rug for the Diplomatic Reception Room. “Our family is grateful to live in this true symbol of our nation’s history, but we are even more honored to play a part in restoring and enhancing our country’s sacred landmark,” Melania said.

And, of course, her decoration efforts didn’t stop there. Who could forget her heavily-memed Christmas decorations? And now there’s the Rose Garden renovation as well. Whereas Melania’s initial decor choices seemed to adhere to tradition, there’s no denying that she is clearly marching to the beat of her own drum in other spaces.

As far as other initiatives go, Melania has stated that she wants to use her position as first lady to help children, especially within the realm of cyberbullying. Her “Be Best” initiative is aimed at helping children be the best they can be — even in the face of cyberbullying and the opioid epidemic. Upon announcing the Be Best initiative, Melania was immediately faced with criticism — many found her cause quite ironic considering her husband’s propensity for, well, cyberbullying.

To be sure, Melania’s run as first lady has been relatively under-the-radar. She will, in all likelihood, not reach Eleanor Roosevelt or Jackie Kennedy status. And that’s not a dig against her — they certainly broke the mold. Then again, Melania’s husband keeps the family name in the headlines plenty. We certainly don’t blame her for taking a step back from the spotlight.

Russell Westbrook Will Remain Out For Game 5 Against The Thunder

The first round series between the Rockets and Thunder was the subject of much anticipation heading into the postseason. After all, it was loaded with story lines. It would feature Russell Westbrook against his former team, and it would pit Chris Paul against James Harden, whose contentious relationship was the subject of much debate.

For the first couple of games, however, it left a lot to be desired. Houston was able to cruise to a 2-0 series lead, as OKC appeared out-manned and outmatched despite their status the scrappy underdogs, and all signs pointed to a quick ticket to the second round for James Harden and company.

But CP3 wasn’t about roll and over die, and all of the sudden, the series is tied at two apiece heading into Game 5 on Wednesday. And now the Rockets have even more bad news. There was some hope that Westbrook might be able to return as the series went on, but according to the latest reports, he’ll remain out for Game 5 as he continues to recover from a quad injury that’s kept sidelined since before the postseason.

Several stars will miss upcoming games because of injury. The Blazers announced that Damian Lillard will sit out Game 5 against the Lakers with a knee sprain, while Kristaps Porzingis will miss his second straight game for the Mavs with knee soreness in their own pivotal Game 5.

Keanu Reeves Insists That ‘Bill And Ted’ Are Not Actually Stoners

It’s been almost 30 years since Keanu Reeves last played Theodore “Ted” Logan, who along with Alex Winter’s William S. “Bill” Preston, Esq., is one-half of cinema’s finest time-traveling dingbats, who return to screens this weekend with Bill & Ted Face the Music. But he knows his character inside and out. So, you’ll have to trust him when he corrects an assumption some people may have, namely: Bill and Ted don’t get high. At least not every day.

“Let me get one thing straight: Bill and Ted are not stoners,” Reeves told USA Today while promoting the threequel. Instead, they’re just sweet — and, you know, kind of dumb. But they’re dumb in a good way. “Bill and Ted they have a nice outlook on life. They like people.”

Face the Music finds the pair once again surfing through time and timelines, in a race to write yet another song that will save humanity from doom. Over their journeys they run into old friends — among them William Sadler’s Grim Reaper, from Bogus Journey — and also different versions of themselves. Perhaps some of those will turn out to be stoners.

In another timeline, Face the Music would already be out, opening in movie theaters nationwide and playing to packed houses filled with viewers cackling in unison. Instead, it’s opening this Friday, and most people will watch it at home over PVOD. But you know, at least at home you can spark one up, even if that’s something Bill and Ted would never do.

Is ‘The Notebook’ Based off of a True Story? It’s Inspired by One!

If you’re looking for a love story that is guaranteed to make you exceedingly happy and turn you into a blubbering, soggy mess of tears, then there’s really only one movie you need to start watching: The Notebook. Yes, it’s a few years old now, but the story is still just as timeless. It will hit you right in the feels every time, no matter how many times you’ve seen it by now.

When a story is as good (or as popular) as the one in The Notebook, people naturally start wondering whether there is a hint of truth to it — or, perhaps, even more than a hint of truth. The Notebook definitely feels like it could have happened in real life, but did it? Is The Notebook based on a true story? Here’s what we know.

Is ‘The Notebook’ based on a true story?

If you — somehow — missed out on watching The Notebook, here’s a quick refresher on the plot. It opens with an elderly man reading a romantic story from his notebook (the notebook) to a fellow nursing home resident. The story is about Noah and Allie — two young people from profoundly different walks of life (he’s a lumber mill worker, she’s an heiress) who fall in love. Allie’s parents disapprove of the match and drive the two of them apart.

Noah writes 365 letters to Allie, trying to win her back — unbeknownst to him, Allie’s mother intercepts every single one of them. Noah goes to war. Allie gets engaged to another guy. Eventually, after many years, Noah and Allie finally end up back together. It’s then revealed that the old man reading the story is Noah, and he’s reading his and Allie’s love story to Allie, who now has dementia (hence why it’s impossible to watch this movie without crying).

At the very end of the film, Noah and Allie die together in their sleep, really calling into question the whole concept of a “happily ever after” — sure, you’re happy that they ended up together, but then why are you also crying your eyes out?!

Anyway, as for whether The Notebook is based on a true story, the answer is yes… kind of. As you are probably already aware, the 2004 film was based on the 1996 novel of the same name — Nicholas Sparks’ first published novel. On his website, Nicholas revealed that the book had been inspired by a real-life couple: his wife’s grandparents.

Nicholas’ wife was very close to her grandparents and she was devastated when the two of them were unable to attend her wedding due to poor health. The day after the wedding, she had an idea to make them feel included: She put on her wedding dress, Nicholas put on his tux, and the two of them went to visit her grandparents. They also brought a piece of wedding cake, a corsage and boutonniere, and a video of the wedding.

“They had no idea we’d be coming and were excited to see us,” Nicholas writes. “My grandfather-in-law slipped into his jacket and put on the boutonniere and we took photographs with them; we went inside and watched the video as we ate a slice of cake, and it was then they told us the story of how they met and fell in love, parts of which eventually made their way into The Notebook.”

the-notebook-based-on-a-true-story-1598382019036.jpg
Source: New Line Cinema

“But though their story was wonderful, what I most remember from that day is the way they were treating each other. The way his eyes shined when he looked at her, the way he held her hand, the way he got her tea and took care of her.”

“I remember watching them together and thinking to myself that after 60 years of marriage, these two people were treating each other exactly the same as my wife and I were treating each other after 12 hours. What a wonderful gift they’d given us, I thought, to show us on our first day of marriage that true love can last forever.”

Nicholas doesn’t mention any heart-breaking twist ending to the story, and yet, you may still find yourself crying after hearing the true story behind The Notebook. We hope they’re happy tears this time, though! Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to go find a box of tissues.
