Dev Patel Hopes His New Movie With The Creator Of ‘Veep’ Leads To More Colorblind Casting

This was supposed to be the Summer of Dev Patel, with the actor starring in two of the season’s most anticipated indie films: The Personal History of David Copperfield and The Green Knight, both of which had their release dates pushed back due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, A24’s foray into medieval fantasy hasn’t been rescheduled yet, but David Copperfield is scheduled to come out this week, on August 28.

Based on Charles Dickens’ novel and not the magician, The Personal History of David Copperfield was written and directed by Armando Iannucci and stars Patel as the titular character. The Skins actor was originally confused why the Veep creator wanted him for the role — David Copperfield is typically depicted as white, and Patel is of Indian descent — and as he told IndieWire, his first question to Iannucci was, “Are you sure?”

He was sure:

“When I knew I was making the film, I could only think of Dev playing David,” he said. “I just thought, that’s how I must cast the whole film, cast who you think is the best person for that role.”

Patel hopes that Personal History leads to more colorblind casting. “There’s so much more opportunity out there, and I’m very grateful for that. I think Armando is really keeping the doors open on this, and hopefully there’s some other brave filmmakers that will follow in his footsteps,” he said. If Steve Buscemi can play a Soviet politician without using a Russian accent, Patel should be able to play whoever the heck he wants.

What If Many Americans Say No to a COVID Vaccine?

By Serena McNiff
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Aug. 25, 2020 (HealthDay News) — Scientists worldwide are racing to test and manufacture one or more coronavirus vaccines. But once a vaccine is proven safe and effective, one big question remains: How do you persuade everyone to take it?

Health experts have reason to worry.

Less than half of all American adults say they plan to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available, according to two recent polls from Yahoo News/YouGov and NBC News/Survey Monkey. But halting the pandemic requires herd immunity — achieved when an estimated 60% to 70% of the population is immune to the virus.

“This is going to be one of the most crucial parts of the vaccination campaign,” said Dr. Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, in Baltimore. “We don’t want anybody to sow doubt in the efficacy of the vaccine — if it is indeed shown to be efficacious and safe — because this is the only way that we really get this virus under control and remove it as the threat that it is.”

Adalja and Dr. Kelly Moore, associate director for immunization education with the Immunization Action Coalition, are just two of the many experts across the country planning for the moment a vaccine is approved. In a recent HD Live! interview, they discussed the reasons why people might be hesitant to get vaccinated, and how health care systems and the government can assure people that getting vaccinated is the right choice.

Moore and Adalja both sought to clear up one concern for vaccine skeptics — that a vaccine is being rushed out and will, therefore, be unsafe. Despite the name given to the government’s vaccine program — Operation Warp Speed — Moore and Adalja insisted that no steps are being skipped.

“When we talk about this as being Operation Warp Speed, warp speed is getting things into clinical trials and then manufacturing,” Adalja explained. “It’s not the clinical trials. That’s going to still take the same time.”

Moore agreed, adding, “We are not cutting steps that will affect our ability to know that this is safe. We’re not taking shortcuts. We are simply streamlining the process to get a safe and effective vaccine to the public as quickly as humanly possible.”

Continued

Even imperfect vaccines save lives

Since no vaccine has been proven safe yet, some of the current skepticism may be resolved once there are more answers. But while clinical trials are still underway, questions about the safety and efficacy of future vaccines are “perfectly normal,” according to Moore.

“Questions are normal and appropriate — even I have questions about how the vaccine will work, how many doses I need, and what the side effects will be,” she said. “We need to get answers to our questions from these phase 3 clinical trials that are going on.”

Others may want to wait for a “perfect” vaccine — but as Adalja explained, first-generation vaccines will likely not be 100% effective, but they may keep people out of the hospital. “We can really accept something that isn’t the best vaccine, but one that’s good enough to get us through this acute part of the pandemic,” he said.

If the first available vaccine has even a 50% efficacy rate, that means that someone who gets it will have a 50% less chance of catching COVID-19 than somebody who hasn’t been vaccinated.

And even though those who get vaccinated with this hypothetical vaccine may still get infected, they’ll be less likely to need hospitalization or die. “Those are still very valuable propositions with the vaccine,” Adalja said. “What this has mostly been about is trying to keep our hospitals and their capacity manageable.”

Once a vaccine is approved, high-risk groups — such as health care workers and the elderly — will likely be vaccinated first. Then, the effort to vaccinate the general public will begin.

Moore said that transparency is key to gaining people’s trust in the vaccine. “It’s our job to communicate with the public — to partner with them — being very transparent about how well this vaccine works, what we can expect of it and what the side effects are,” she said. “They need to understand if they should expect a sore arm or a little bit of fever for a day or two as the vaccine works, so that they know what’s normal and expected.”

Continued

Countering anti-vaxxers

At the Immunization Action Coalition, Moore works with the groups that typically administer vaccines — such as clinics and pharmacists — to prepare them for when the first COVID-19 vaccine becomes available.

“Our best partners will be those private clinics and pharmacies who give lots of seasonal flu vaccine every year,” Moore said. “We’ll be building on that infrastructure to push this vaccine out more broadly to the public and make it accessible.”

And the upcoming flu season this fall may be good practice.

“Seasonal influenza vaccination programs this fall are the perfect warm-up game for the big game with COVID-19 next year,” Moore said. “For those clinics that give seasonal influenza vaccines, they need to be looking at how they vaccinate every person in their practice. That should be their goal.”

Vaccine skepticism was already a major health concern, but the global pandemic should serve as a rallying cry to combat anti-vaccination sentiments.

“We have to be very proactive at combating anti-vaccine messages and vaccine hesitancy messages that are going to be out there because they are going to be out in full force,” Adalja said. “It’s going to be important for infectious disease doctors and family physicians and public health advocates to really talk about the risks and benefits of this vaccine, to be very transparent about the data so that we get this high vaccine uptake.”

He May Have Violated the Terms of Bail

When Sway House member and frontrunner Bryce Hall was arrested in May on drug charges, his apology came with the promise to his fans that he was a changed man.

“I emerged from that cell as a 20-year-old with a renewed sense of understanding about who I am and who I want to be,” he wrote to his followers in an essay for People. He had promised he was working toward sobering up and getting his life back on track.

But his words weren’t supported by his actions when Bryce and the other Sway House boys hosted a series of parties in their Los Angeles mansions, violating the current social distancing guidelines set in place for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, there are reports that Bryce’s 21st birthday party could be a violation of the terms of his bail. Does this mean Bryce is going back to jail?

Bryce Hall may have violated his bail terms with a party in Los Angeles.

On Aug. 15, Bryce hosted a massive party for his 21st birthday. More than 100 people were in attendance, and videos of the gathering showed guests not wearing masks while standing shoulder-to-shoulder inside and outside their home.

It was around 4 a.m. when the party was finally broken up. According to influencer drama account @DefNoodles on Twitter, the boys were fined over $30,000 in various charges for the party.

DefNoodles also claims that part of Bryce’s bail agreement was that he would not engage in any illegal activity, and his Aug. 15 party potentially violated those terms.

“Texas DA’s office confirmed they are closely looking at revoking Bryce Hall’s bail for drug-related arrest in May because conditions of Bryce’s bail demand that he does not engage illegal or immoral activities,” he tweeted.

“LA Mayor’s office has been in close contact with Texas DA in Lee County, where Bryce Hall and Jaden Hossler were arrested on drug-related charges,” he continued. “They are actively looking at revoking Bryce and Jaden’s bail, and arresting and extraditing them to Texas.”

While nothing has been confirmed yet, this means Bryce could be looking at jail time in his immediate future, depending on what the Texas DA decides. Jaden Hossler, who was arrested with Bryce, may face similar consequences.

At this time, there is no definitive answer as to whether Bryce will be going to jail, though it’s possible. The city of Los Angeles shut off water and power to one of the Sway House’s two homes in response to their party, as the city’s mayor had promised to do to anyone violating the current pandemic guidelines.

According to @DefNoodles, the boys have also been threatened with eviction from their homes once eviction bans in Los Angeles are lifted.

The best way to prevent contracting or spreading coronavirus is with thorough hand washing and social distancing. If you feel you may be experiencing symptoms of coronavirus, which include persistent cough (usually dry), fever, shortness of breath, and fatigue, please call your doctor before going to get tested. For comprehensive resources and updates, visit the CDC website. If you are experiencing anxiety about the virus, seek out mental health support from your provider or visit NAMI.org.

Trevor Noah Explains Why He Was ‘Glad’ To Be On Hiatus When The George Floyd Protests Began

As the world went into lockdowns and quarantines barely two months into 2020, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah was one of the first broadcasts to switch to an “at home” format featuring Noah on his couch wearing a comfortable hoodie. Jokingly rebranded as The Daily Social Distancing Show, Noah became a go-to for insightful commentary and information in the early days of the pandemic. His surprisingly no-nonsense and engaging interview with Dr. Fauci before he became a Saturday Night Live sketch, and political target, has been viewed over 11 million times.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus wasn’t the only major news event that broke during the spring. The killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor sparked nationwide and global Black Lives Matter protests in late May. At the time, The Daily Show was on a two-week hiatus, which Noah appreciated for a simple and insightful reason.

“I was glad that we weren’t on the air. I couldn’t speak. I had to listen,” Noah explained to Variety. The time absorbing the protests also caused Noah to rethink details like his wardrobe when the show returned to cover the growing movement. “I wore a black hoodie for a while. Not to build it up, but I just — I didn’t feel like color, you know? Every day, when I walked into the closet, it didn’t feel like a purple day; it didn’t feel like a green day; it didn’t feel like a red day. It felt like a black day.”

It’s that type of thinking that led Jon Stewart to recently praise The Daily Show for being “better” with Noah behind the desk, especially when it comes to bringing more diverse opinions to the show. While admitting his own failings at not making The Daily Show more inclusive, Stewart had nothing but praise for Noah while talking to Howard Stern. “It took 16 years to change it at a glacial pace. Because that kind of mindset to me, because I didn’t grow up in it… it’s not a part of me,” Stewart said. “For Trevor, it’s a part of him. It flows from him naturally… It makes it better. The show is better.”

Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’ Remake Will Forge Ahead With A Late 2020 Release On CBS All Access

Back in mid-2019, it felt like fantastic news to hear that Stephen King’s The Stand was getting the remake treatment with a limited series at CBS All Access. Then six months passed, and you-know-what happened, and suddenly, this show seemed like the victim of unfortunate timing. Yes, King’s book is widely considered to be one of the best post-apocalyptic works of fiction, but perhaps a revisiting of the Captain Trips virus that obliterated 99% of Earth’s population isn’t such a great idea in 2020. Well, CBS All Access has thought this through, and they still got production back on track to move ahead with a December 17 release.

Skepticism might be the initial reaction to this decision, but this is Stephen King we’re talking about. People know to expect a darkened (and possibly darkly humorous) tone from him. Even HBO’s The Outsider contained a Spanish Flu reference around the same time that Covid-19 was heating up, so there’s that. And King had already written a new ending for the series, so there’s some curiosity-fueling potential for this remake starring Alexander Skarsgard as Randall Flag, James Marsden as Stu Redman, and a vast ensemble cast that includes Marilyn Manson as an unknown character.

Variety quotes The Stand showrunner Benjamin Cavell about why the time might still be right for this remake, despite it feeling all-too-eerily relevant:

“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant. We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades. We’re so proud of this show and its attempt to find meaning and hope in the most uncertain of times. We can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Back in March, James Marsden revaled how unsettling it felt to be on set when anyone displayed symptoms like coughing, but it appears that everyone rallied to get this remake’s footing back on solid ground for a launch. And who knows, this might actually draw in some wild TV ratings, depending upon several factors, including where the U.S. stands on putting Covid-19 to sleep for good.

Recently, King’s son, NOS4A2 author Joe Hill, told us that he sometimes talks with King about our current situation. Hill quoted King as saying, “The thing about this particular scenario is that imagination is this incredibly vital tool that’s used to make a living, but it can also turn against you.” Clearly, both father and son are in the business of horror, and they do it well, and the genre can provide therapeutic experiences for audiences. We’ll find out more in December when The Stand remake launches.
