What Does Lisa Barlow Do for a Living? ‘RHOSLC’ Star Works in Events

As Lisa revealed in a previous episode of RHOSLC, she is particularly proud of the work she has done for the Sundance Film Festival.

“My marketing company is LUXE Marketing, and, you know, I’m busy year-round. When it comes to Sundance, I am my most busy. I have 10 days straight of nonstop events for multiple businesses, multiple companies, night after night after night. It is [consuming], it is hard, it’s not for everyone, but I love it,” Lisa explained in a previous teaser.

“Some people call me the ‘Queen of Sundance,’ I just think I’m really good at what I do,” Lisa went on to say.

“You’ve gotta kiss the ring,” Vanderpump Rules star Kate Maloney mockingly remarked in a previous video before admitting that she has never heard of Lisa even though she considers herself a Sundance regular.

Queen of Sundance or not, one thing is clear. Lisa works hard and plays hard, which is how she achieved incredible success in her professional and private life.

We Interviewed the Band Behind the Viral TikTok ‘Wellerman’ Sea Shanty

TikTok is currently overrun with people singing “The Wellerman,” a sea shanty about the New Zealand whaling industry. Packed with 19th-century nautical slang, the lyrics aren’t exactly Top 40 material. But with its rousing chorus and jaunty rhythm, it has undeniably powerful vibes. Kicking off with a solo version sung by Scottish TikToker Nathan Evans, “The Wellerman” snowballed in popularity as more people added new harmony tracks. To get to the bottom of this trend, we spoke to the sea shanty band The Longest Johns, who sowed the seeds for this song to go viral.

First, what exactly are sea shanties?

Sea shanties are working songs, designed to help sailors keep time while doing repetitive labor. They overlap with the call-and-response style of chain gang songs and the "waulking songs" of Scottish laundrywomen. These days, we mostly hear sea shanties in the soundtrack for nautical films, but the genre is a surprisingly perfect fit for TikTok. The songs are usually performed a capella (making it easy for people to join in), and a typical sea shanty invites layered harmonies. In other words, they're ideal for TikTok's duet function. The results are both haunting and incredibly catchy:

How 'The Wellerman' went viral

British folk band The Longest Johns have released three albums so far, all based around traditional sea shanties and shanty-adjacent folk songs. "The Wellerman" is kind of a deep cut by their standards, but as the band explained to us in a Zoom interview, there's a reason why this particular song went viral. The Daily Dot: Is Wellerman a popular song when you perform live, or was it a surprise to see this particular sea shanty take off on TikTok?

Jonathan "JD" Darley: It’s actually grown in popularity since we put out a video about a year and a half ago of us singing it at other people in the game Sea of Thieves. We made a little series called Open Crewsing where we’d join random players and start singing for them in the game. The first one we put out was "The Wellerman."

Before that, we’d sung it at gigs and it was on our albums and stuff. But it wasn’t anything too different from the others. That video got really popular in Sea of Thieves circles, and it started to spread. Then in a bunch of different waves, that video and that song has had a bunch of different viral peaks. It started getting shared on Tumblr, and then iFunny, and then it had a little run on Reddit. Then we released all of our songs for use on TikTok... leading up to now, where this one’s gone absolutely crazy and blown up in the mainstream.

Could you tell me about the history of the song itself? Andy Yates: It’s an old New Zealand sea shanty, a whaling song. If you listen to the verse lyrics, that’s quite obvious. The Wellerman itself refers to a company called the Weller Bros., they would supply whaling ships around that area. Which is what the whole chorus is about. It’s quite a weird and obscure sea shanty.

Sea shanties are kind of the definition of a niche genre, but they clearly have widespread appeal. Why do songs like this stand the test of time, 200 years later?
Advertisement Hide
Dave Robinson: I think it’s always been communal in nature. Right from the beginning they were made so people could work in time with each other. They had to be able to join in. I have a theory about why "The Wellerman" is quite so popular at this moment: it’s a song about people in a tough situation waiting for the hope of someone bringing supplies. The Wellerman were the [British supermarket chain] Morrisons of yesteryear. It's the ideal genre for collaboration on social media, and for people who can’t sing together in person. JD: There’s a lot to be said about the nature of the songs as well. We’ve always been surprised with how many people who’ve never heard it before, kind of go through that whole realization of “what is this nonsense?” to “this is alright” to “this is really cool!” One of the best examples was when we were playing the support act for Robbie’s wife, who’s a pop singer, and she was performing to a group of quite young teenagers. And we were the support act, doing sea shanties. To start with they were just like, “What the hell is this nonsense, this is weird.” Then they started to look around at each other and settle in, and by the end of the first song, they were all hooked. For the rest of it, they were just going nuts, singing along, clapping. It’s very niche, but it’s surprising and amazing how easy it is to connect with it and feel that sense of community and join in these songs.

The Essential ‘MAFS’ Season 12 Spoilers for Anyone Who Hates Surprises

While the quick engagement timeline on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette is often criticized, it’s nothing compared to what the couples on Married at First Sight go through.

The hit experimental Lifetime series returns for Season 12 on Jan. 13, and the five Atlanta-based couples get a two-week engagement before meeting their spouses at the altar. They then go on luxury honeymoons before moving in together. Meanwhile, they’re still trying to learn their partners’ names and other basic things about them.

Though some viewers like to be surprised by the outcome of each season, there are many who just need answers to one simple question: who stays together?

Keep reading for the rumored MAFS Season 12 spoilers. Plus, find out which storyline will rock the entire season.

Here are the ‘MAFS’ Season 12 spoilers we know so far.

While the current marital status of all five couples has yet to be revealed, there was one key spoiler released ahead of the Season 12 premiere. It features a storyline that has never been on the show before.

According to the Instagram account @MAFSFan (think of it like the Reality Steve for Married at First Sight) one couple immediately faces an insurmountable hurdle: a pregnancy.

Though other alums from the show have gone on to have kids, this duo is dealing with pregnancy news of another kind.

The couple dealing with the shocking news is Chris Williams II and Paige Banks. As viewers will learn in the Season 12 premiere, Paige is a 26-year-old accountant, realtor, and homeowner. Chris, who is one year older is equally career-driven. He’s a restaurant owner and a finance manager who was actually engaged two times before signing up for the show.

Paige and Chris were initially matched because of their shared desire to have a big brood, but Chris apparently got started on his before the show began.

Per the Instagram account, Chris and Paige learn early on in their marriage that Chris’ ex is expecting his baby. There’s conflicting speculation about whether Chris knew of this baby news before going on the show.

Unsurprisingly, this will put the newly married couple into a predicament unlike any other.

Interestingly, the account also uncovered some other news about Chris’ past. He got engaged to Mercedes Myrick in February of 2020, and their relationship may have lasted until the summer of 2020.

Season 12 commenced filming at the end of August, and casting concluded in June. He could have still been engaged when he was cast on the show.

Who are the ‘MAFS’ Season 12 couples?

Though Paige and Chris might be the frontrunners for the messiest Season 12 couple, there are four other couples who will keep the viewers intrigued.

Vincent (27) is an auto broker who gets married to Brianna (28), an engineer who prides herself on keeping a clean house.

Erik is a 34-year-old divorced military veteran who gets matched with Virginia, a 26-year-old account coordinator.

The oldest Season 12 cast member is 38-year-old Jacob. He’s ready to have kids ASAP, while his 28-year-old bride, Haley, wants to get to know him. She works as an account executive.

Rounding out Season 12 is the fifth couple, Ryan (29) and Clara (27).

Which couples will stay together and likely appear on Couples’ Cam? You’ll have to tune in to find out.

Married at First Sight is produced by Kinetic Content, and it airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
