On this day, August 31, 1876, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, a son of Sultan Abdülmecid I, he ascended to the the Ottoman throne. His 33 year reign as Sultan of Ottoman Empire known as the Hamidian era. He ruled over a period of decline, including rebellions (especially in the Balkans), and oversaw an unsuccessful war with the Russian Empire (1877–78). Followed by a successful war against the Kingdom of Greece in 1897 with the Ottomans. ✍🏻
