On This Day, 3 March 1924, the office of the Ottoman Caliphate was abolished by a decree of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As part of Atatürk’s reforms after the Ottoman Empire was replaced by the Republic of Turkey, Abdulmejid II was removed from his position as the last Ottoman caliph.

The Islamic Caliphate system began right after the Prophet of Islam passed away in 632 CE. Rashidun Caliphate was the first caliphate that ruled the Islamic world from 632 to 661 CE. After the fall of the Rashidun Caliphate, many dynasties took over the two holy cities of Islam and claimed their caliphal authority.

The Ottoman dynasty was the last one, which claimed the caliphal authority since their victory over the Mamluks of Egypt led by Sultan Selim I in 1517. Since their fall in 1924 (100 years ago), there has been no Caliph in the Muslim world.
