On this day 16 July 1212 CE, the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, known in Islamic history as the Battle of Al-Uqab, took place. It was an important turning point in the Medieval history of Spain.

The Christian forces of King Alfonso VIII of Castile were joined by the armies of his rivals, Sancho VII of Navarre and Peter II of Aragon, and they decisively defeated the Almohad Empire (Al-Muwahhidun) under the leadership of Muhammad al-Nasir.

The battle marked the beginning of the Almohad Dynasty’s decline. In the following decades, the cities of Córdoba, Seville, and Jaén would fall to the Christian conquest, with only Granada holding out for another 250 years.
