James Corden Says He Didn’t Steal Joke From Ricky Gervais

James Corden is responding to others’ claims about him — again.

Just when the controversy surrounding his alleged rude behavior at NYC restaurant Balthazar was finally dying down, now he’s responding to a joke-stealing accusation.

OK, let’s break it down: Earlier today, footage of James’ monologue from last night’s The Late Late Show With James Corden circulated, suggesting that a bit James did about guitar lessons was very similar to a joke that Ricky Gervais told in his 2018 special Humanity.

According to Variety, Gervais shared the joke on Twitter in a since-deleted quote tweet where he said, with some obvious sarcasm, “[Corden’s] bit about the town square advert for guitar lessons is brilliant.”

Ricky also replied to another Twitter user and said that he believed that, if the joke was indeed ripped off, it likely came from Corden’s writing team. “I doubt he would knowingly just copy such a famous stand up routine word for word like that,” he said.

@Drew_1981 No. I reckon one of the writers ‘came up with it’ for him. I doubt he would knowingly just copy such a famous stand up routine word for word like that.

Ricky also replied to another Twitter user who asked why he deleted his original QT, saying that he “started to feel sorry” for James.

Now, James has responded to all the joke-stealing chatter.

In a Tweet from the Late Late Show‘s official Twitter account, James claimed that he “inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him.”

Inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him. It’s brilliant, because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix. J x

Ricky isn’t one to typically stay silent about, well, anything — so we’ll see if, and how, he responds to what James has said so far.
