How “Squid Sushi” Saved the Lives of Kindergarteners #Shorts

There was a horrifying incident in November 2021 where a man with a knife broke into a kindergarten in Miyagi prefecture. Miraculously however, no one was hurt, thanks to the kindergarten staff delivering “squid sushi.”

Squid sushi is “いかのおすし” in Japanese, and this is a crime prevention slogan for kids based on word association.

いか:行かない Do not follow strangers
の:乗らない Do not ride strangers’ cars
お:大声を出す Scream when in an emergency
す:すぐに逃げる Run immediately
し:知らせる Inform adults ASAP

A kindergarten staff member who was playing with the kids noticed a suspicious man outside, and took the children indoors telling them “It’s going to rain.” Afterwards, he told his coworkers “Squid Sushi (いかのおすし) has been delivered,” which was a code meaning the children needed to evacuate immediately.

Thanks to this judgment, the staff succeeded in seizing the criminal without provoking him.

The criminal later confessed that he wanted a death penalty by killing 2 or 3 of the kids.

There have been many of such horrific cases recently, such as the “Joker incident” in Tokyo, and I hope that immediate action will be taken to prevent them from happening.
