High School Student Celebrates Graduation Months Early So Terminally Ill Mom Can Attend

While many high school seniors are celebrating their last spring right now, Tyson Madson is cherishing his last moments with his mom.

Utah mom Sherri Madson suffers from terminal liver cancer. She’s always dreamt of seeing Tyson, her youngest son, graduate high school, but her illness may now prevent that.

“During our Christmas party I asked her if she was going to be there for my graduation and she said she didn’t know if she was going to make it,” Tyson told Fox 13.

Tyson and his family didn’t want to leave the matter in fate’s hands. Instead, they decided to make Sherri’s dream come true on their own.

The Madsons rallied two other families and held an early graduation ceremony with about 60 attendees. There were flowers, speeches, and the actual graduation programs from the school.

Graduation is especially meaningful for Sherri, who was a teacher for 18 years. She worked as a school counselor until early January, when her illness rendered her unable to work.

“I didn’t really want to wear the robe thing, but I did it because I knew it was for my Mom and I wanted to make her happy,” Tyson said.

By that measure, the graduation ceremony was a huge success.

“I felt like I’m a part of it, whether or not I am that day,” Sherri said through tears.

The family is now creating a foundation dedicated to students in their mother’s name.
