Meredith Reilly and Zachary Houdek are juniors at American University in Washington, DC. The two were excited to vote in their first election. Like so many people this year, the two planned to vote by absentee ballots. But as Election Day drew close, they hadn’t received them.
“This is something that we both looked forward to since we were young,” Meredith told Inside Edition.
It was important to the two for their voices to be heard. That’s why Meredith proposed a daring idea. She asked Zachary if he’d want to drive with her back to Texas, their home state, to cast their votes.
“She looked at me and said, ‘Do you want to drive back to Texas and vote right now?’ And I was like, ‘Sure, let’s do it,’” Zachary shared.
Thus began their 30-hour car ride to the Lone Star State. The two rented a car and covered over 1,400 miles to make sure they participated in this monumental race. Meredith cast her vote in her hometown of Fort Worth. Then, they headed to Austin for Zachary to cast his vote.
“We just had to make sure our voices were heard and that our votes were counted,” Meredith said.
Both kids recognized the privilege of being able to drop everything to cast their vote. They hoped that with their votes, they could help bring about change that
