Stranger Comes To Drop Off Check After Girl Secretly Writes A Letter About Her Former Teacher

Lilly Guthrie is a second-grader from Alabama with a big heart. She happened to catch a news segment showing local teachers being surprised with money, simply for being great at what they do.

The uplifting segment inspired Lilly to come up with an idea, all by herself. She wanted to see if she could earn some money for her favorite teacher in the world, Summer Lingerfelt, her former first-grade teacher.

Without any prompting or assistance from her family, Lilly wrote a letter about her beloved teacher and sent it to Ben Smith, her local on-air meteorologist who goes around surprising teachers with free money.

Summer had no idea what was in store for her.

“She pays a lot of money to do nice things for us and I really wanted to give her a surprise so I decided to write a letter to y’all for her to win,” Lilly said.

Summer is one of the countless teachers who selflessly dips into her own bank account to ensure her students have a richer learning experience. According to a 2018 article on NYTimes.com, 94 percent of teachers spend their own hard-earned money on school supplies.

In the clip below, Lilly learns that her heartfelt handwritten letter won the big Tools for Teachers contest — and Summer breaks down in tears realizing the great impact she has made on her former students.
