Scruffy Mutt Rescued From Kill Shelter Lands Lead Role In Disney’s ‘Lady And The Tramp’

It’s a Cinderella story for one rescue dog who has found his way to big-screen stardom in a Disney movie. Disney’s live-action remake of the animated 1955 film Lady and the Tramp will star 2-year-old rescue dog Monte as Tramp. The character’s voice will be provided by Justin Theroux. Lady will be played by a Cocker spaniel named Rose and will be voiced by Tessa Thompson. The live-action remake will debut on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus, which launches on November 12.

It wasn’t too long ago that Monte was just another pooch at the Halo Animal Rescue in Phoenix, Arizona. He arrived at the shelter last year. He was brought in by the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Monte, once named Rocky, was one of six dogs surrendered by a family who could no longer afford to take care of them. Monte was only at the shelter for a week before he got his big break.

“We were very excited to see Monte is going to be a star,” Heather Allen explained. Heather is the president and CEO of Halo Animal Rescue. “We didn’t know exactly what they were working on until we saw it come out on the internet probably like everybody else.”

There’s no word whether a premiere would feature the film’s lovable animals. If there is, Halo would love to be there to cheer one of their own on. “Not really sure what the fanfare is with all that, but if there is one, we would love to go,” Heather said.
