Samsung Smart Fridge is a product created by electronics company Samsung which has a hub screen one can use to browse the internet and user internet apps. The product became the subject of memes on Reddit in early 2019 alongside Airpod Flexing as a way to sarcastically one-up those who brag about their Airpods.

Origin

Samsung debuted the smart fridge, dubbed the “Family Hub Smart Fridge,” in May of 2016. It was initially called a “ridiculous, wonderful” concept and the internet speed of the early models was slow.

Spread

In January of 2019, the product began seeing use in memes sarcastically praising it as the premier way to use the internet. On January 20th, 2019, Redditor white_fro posted a Drakeposting meme to /r/dankmemes mentioning the fridge, gaining over 50,000 points on the subreddit (shown below, left). The post was influential in making Samsung Smart Fridges a common joke on the subreddit for several days, as users would title posts variations of “sent from my smart fridge.” On January 24th, Redditor TheKunjappu posted a joke to /r/MemeEconomy that gained over 230 points (shown below, right).

As jokes about Airpods began spreading on Reddit, Samsung Smart Fridge jokes in which the fridge is a presented as a more premier product grew popular. For example, user TheCrazyEngieMain posted a Buff Tom making that point, gaining over 67,000 points (shown below, left). User DragionTech posted a Man It Hurts to Be This Hip meme about the fridge, gaining over 6,000 points (shown below, right). An inquiry about the jokes was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop.
