As people prepare to flee the path of Hurricane Dorian, volunteers from New York are thinking of the helpless. Animal shelters are getting ready for the influx of displaced animals, and people like Bill McClellan are ready to help.
Bill showed up to the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington with a trunk packed with supplies. He and other volunteers braved the heavy Labor Day rains in response to a call for donations put out by the shelter.
“We have friends that live in the Carolinas and Florida, and we are keeping our fingers crossed for them because they are all worried,” Bill said.
The animal shelter put out the call for donations on Saturday. Just a few days later, its mobile unit was stuffed full with pet food, towels, and bottles of water. The donated items will be distributed to animal shelters potentially affected by the hurricane.
“I felt like this was something I could do that was a concrete thing because you get worried about what might happen,” added Suzette Filipski, who also donated supplies. The shelter’s truck will drop off supplies and then transport some of Florida’s displaced animals back to Long Island for adoption.
“When I see people come out and go out of their way in a storm, that’s remarkable to me. I love that stuff,” said Richard Nixon of North Shore Animal League.
