According to Phys.org, “Saqqara is part of the necropolis of Egypt’s ancient capital of Memphis that includes the famed Giza Pyramids” and at least 11 beautiful pyramids.
Archaeologists were exploring Saqqara’s vast archaeology area when they made an incredible discovery: three 36-foot-deep burial wells containing 13 wooden coffins.
Then, they found another 14 coffins… and they kept finding them until they got to at least 59 coffins, all containing the bodies of Egyptian priests, prestigious members of the community and other senior men.
The sarcophagi were still in very good condition, painted and inscribed with hieroglyphs.
And for the first time since its initial sealing 2,500 years ago — dating all the way back to the 26th dynasty — one of these coffins was opened in front of a live audience, courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Dozens of onlookers stood in awe as archaeologists opened the sarcophagi to reveal a mummy wrapped tightly inside an intricate burial cloth.
According to the National Geographic, folklore has spurred the belief that opening a mummy’s tomb leads to death and curses — a fact which has led many people on social media to joke about the timing of the unsealing, and whether or not 2020 was the right year to potentially unleash any more bad luck.

The coffins will be transferred to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza for display.
