Matt Damon Opens Up About How Best Friend Ben Affleck Is Doing After His Recent Sobriety Relapse

Matt Damon recently sat down with Entertainment Tonight‘s Lauren Zima to chat about his new work and about his best friend, Ben Affleck. When Lauren asked Matt about how Ben is doing after his recent sobriety slip-up, Matt quickly answered, “He’s looking great and he’s doing great,” Matt told Lauren. He then let another piece of news slip: the writing team are working on new work together!

Matt went on to say, “We’ve been working on a screenplay… and he’s just doing good.”

While fans of Affleck will be happy with the news, the actor’s recent slip was likely a disappointment after he celebrated one year of sobriety in August of this year. At the time, a source told Us Weekly, “Ben is in a great place in his recovery and life. He continues to want to be the best father and friend he can be.”

However, Ben, like the rest of us, is only human. After he was spotted having trouble “standing and walking unsteadily” at a recent UNICEF event, it was clear that he had derailed his hard work from the previous year. In the following days, he was spotted outside ex-wife Jennifer Garner’s home, where he told a reporter, “It happens, it’s a slip, but I’m not going to let it derail me.”

Matt and Ben are longtime friends, dating back to their high school days in Boston. In the interview, Matt also told Lauren about a rough and tumble fight the two were tangled up in back in the day. “It was right then that little five foot two Ben Affleck tackled this dude off me, like out of nowhere. I was like a junior and he was like a freshman. But I remember that that was a big moment. This guy … he will put himself in a really bad spot for me.”

Ben is reportedly back at work filming Deep Water.
