Look at My Lawyer, Dawg, I’m Going to Jail refers to a catchphrase often used as a caption for images of various unusually-looking people and creatures. Originating from a viral tweet, the catchphrase gained popularity in memes in early August 2020.
Origin
On February 28th, 2020, Twitter user @gbg_buckss posted a photograph of a man in a black suit sitting on a bench, his eyes closed and his right hand placed in his pants, writing “Look at my lawyer Dawgggggg I’m goin to jail😫🤯🤣.” The post received over 19,600 retweets and 106,300 likes in six months (shown below).
Spread
In the following days, the image received viral spread online; for example, a February 29th, 2020, repost by iFunny user MemeKING_supreme received over 42,400 smiles in six months. A March 10th, 2020, repost by Facebook page The Original She Wants The D Received over 1,100 reactions and 1,200 shares.
Prior to late July 2020, the catchphrase saw limited spread online; for example, on March 4th, 2020, Twitter user @sameplan posted a joke that received 30 retweets and 290 likes (shown below, left). On July 14th, Twitter user @KidsSeeGaving made a tweet that received over 100 likes (shown below, right).
Starting in late July 2020, a version of the meme imagining a mammoth being the lawyer started being circulated (shown below), with Instagram user big_chungles making the earliest found post with the image on July 28th. The post received over 5,300 likes in two weeks; a July 30th, repost by Instagram user sammyblack received additional 6,400 likes.
Following the viral spread of the post, more variations of the meme were posted by users on Instagram, Reddit and other online platforms in early August 2020.
