Halloween comes with some pretty fierce competition as far as most kids are concerned. But this year, there was a clear winner when it came to best costume. A five-year-old boy from Nebraska rocked an amazing Star Wars costume and his wheelchair in no way put a damper on it. In fact, the costume actually was built on the chair itself.
Raylan Taylor of Omaha was born with a rare disease called Joubert Syndrome, which impacts his fine motor skills, his mother, Jocelyn Taylor, told KMTV. As a result, Raylan uses a wheelchair to get around. Of course, come Halloween, that can make things tricky. “I think it’s easy for kids and parents alike to feel a little bit restricted by what they can do for a costume, especially if they’re in a wheelchair,” Jocelyn Taylor said.
That wasn’t an issue for Raylan this year. The nonprofit Walkin’ and Rollin’ Costumes stepped in to help because that’s exactly their purpose. They create costumes for kids in walkers and wheelchairs. For Raylan, the nonprofit custom built his X-wing fighter, which if you aren’t a Star Wars fan, is the same spacecraft flown by Poe Dameron.
The costume reportedly took nearly 150 hours to build but clearly, it was worth all those hours to make this kid’s day. Rayland got to show off his amazing costume at Trunk or Treating event put on by Children’s Respite Care Center.
This is one Halloween he won’t soon forget and neither will we.
