La Liga

In 2019, it was up-and-coming star Gabigol bringing Flamengo back to victory with two extremely late goals (and a red card at the death) over 2018 victors River Plate. The 2018 edition put the fierce River-Boca Juniors rivalry on the global stage. Fan violence (against players!) was so pronounced that the second leg of the final had to be moved to Madrid—ironic since the tournament is named for those who liberated the continent from Spanish and Portuguese rule. The 2018 debacle led organizers to change the final from a two-leg home-and-home format to a single-match, neutral-site, winner-take-all affair.

Brasileirão

Everyone who follows soccer knows about Brazil’s national team, but not as many fans know about the Brasileirão. Teams like Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians, and Flamengo have made their mark on both global cup competitions and the Copa Libertadores. In addition to Gabigol, the league features the likes of Éverton, Gabriel Veron, and Gerson—all with the potential to star for European teams in the coming years.

Turkish Super Lig

Typically, BeIN’s coverage of this league—with some of the most demonstrative, passionate fans in the world—gravitate around Istanbul’s trio of top teams. Galatasaray is perhaps the most recognizable name and tends to go more international in its acquisitions; it’s most recent big-splash signing was Colombian legend Radamel Falcao. Fenerbahce is considered the more “working-class” alternative to “high-falutin’” Galatasaray; it currently features Max Kruse and Victor Moses in key roles. Superliga Argentina

The crown jewel of Buenos Aires-based TyC Sports is Argentina’s top-tier league. The Superliga includes River Plate and Boca Juniors, the implacable Buenos Aires-based rivals who face off in one of the world’s highest-profile derbies. While the top Argentine players in the world typically graduate to the best leagues in Europe, and while some are finding their way to MLS, many begin their careers with one of the top-tier teams in the Superliga. The current U-23 roster includes players from Superliga teams like Newell’s Old Boys, Godoy Cruz, and Estudiantes.
