Bayern Munich vs. Union Berlin: Preview

The Bundesliga season’s restart includes league leaders Bayern Munich traveling to Berlin to face the newly-promoted (and definitely holding their own) 1. FC Union Berlin on Sunday.

Bayern was only four points ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund heading into the weekend, but still looking like favorites to capture its eighth straight championship. Assuming that the Champions League starts up again soon, the German giants are in a good place, looking like they’ll get past Chelsea to get into the quarterfinal round—where they’ll join fellow Bundesliga squad RB Leipzig.

31-year-old striker Robert Lewandowski is showing he’s still got it, with the Golden Boot in both the Bundesliga (with 25 goals) and Champions League (with 11 goals). He leads a team of internationally-known players including German legends Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller, former Liverpool and Barcelona sparkplug Philippe Coutinho, French World Cup hero Benjamin Pavard (whose goal of the tournament defied physics), and players like Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso, who could be top players for their respective German and French World Cup squads by 2022.

Union Berlin, meanwhile, isn’t even the most successful team in its city, with Hertha Berlin being more of a Bundesliga mainstay. The team’s most famous player, Neven Subotic, is a central defender who made his name at Dortmund and is now at the tail end of a distinguished career. But Union Berlin fits a common international soccer trope of working-class underdog team sharing a city with a more favored, successful, upper-class-leaning team—though its rivalry with Hertha Berlin is tempered by Union being located in what was East Berlin and generally good feelings that came with German reunification.
