There is no doubt that women have the skills to play sports and be just as successful as men — even football. Brynna Nixon of Fife, Washington, is another prime example. Brynna is a junior at Fife High School and plays on the varsity team as a backup quarterback for the Trojans. Recently, she made history with her play on the football field, making a pass that would result in a touchdown.
The high school junior had to step in when the starting quarterback sustained an injury. The score against Clover Park would mark the first by a female quarterback during a varsity game in the school’s history at playoff time. “It was pretty exciting,” said Fife coach Kent Nevin. “We don’t treat her any differently. And I think she is a trailblazer in that regard. She doesn’t complain.”
The varsity player has had a love for football ever since she was a little girl. Brynna is a fan of the Seattle Seahawks and looks up to quarterback Russell Wilson. The varsity star said, “It’s absolutely phenomenal to have this kind of opportunity, to have people look up to you in ways that you’ve looked up to other people.” Brynna has always had the support of her parents when it came to her playing football. She hopes to inspire young girls who have a dream of playing sports. “Play your sport. Play the sport you want to play, no matter what it is,” said Brynna.
