Diabotical is a free-to-play multiplayer-only arena FPS developed by the Swedish team GD studio. The game was released on September 3rd, 2020.

History

Prior to August 2015, former professional Quake and World of Warcraft player and eSports commentator James “2GD” Harding started the development of Diabotical, a fast-paced arena FPS video game inspired by Quake III Arena. On July 31st, 2016, the development team GD Studio started a Kickstarter campaign for the game, with nearly 7,000 backers pledging over 168,000 British pounds. On August 1st, 2016, the developers uploaded the first trailer for the game to YouTube (shown below).

On September 3rd, 2020, GD Studio released the free-to-play game for PC through the Epic Games Store.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Diabotical shares many similarities with Quake III Arena, including the “holy trinity” of
the base weapons (rocket launcher, shaft and pincer). The gameplay is heavily focuses on the fast-pace combat, map control, movement control and outsmarting the opponent. In the Diabotical, egg-shaped robots fight eachother on a variety of available arenas, with several free-for-all and team versus team modes available in the game.

Impact

2GD Studio developed Diabotical as an eSports-focused game, with the developer team announcing a 100,000 USD prizepool for the upcoming Diabotical tournaments.

As of September 4th, 2020, the offical Twitter account for the game had over 31,000 followers, while /r/Diabotical subreddit had over 11,500 members.
