In 2019, John Reid’s 16-year-old son, Dakota, passed away after a tragic car accident. Before he died, John rested his head on Dakota’s chest at the hospital just to hear his son’s heartbeat for the last time.
Then there’s a man named Robert O’Connor, who needed to put on life support after a decade-long battle with heart disease. Thankfully, a donor heart gave him another chance at life — as he one of the five recipients of Dakota’s organs.
Robert wanted to show Dakota’s family how grateful he was to have been given such a precious gift. So, while at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, he enlisted the help of the hospital staff to create an unforgettable surprise for the Reids.
In the tear-jerking clip below, John’s wife films the moment she hands her husband a stuffed bear and the note that came with it.
“John and Stephanie, we would have preferred to give this to you in person, but not sure when that would happen,”it read.
And with that, John pressed the bear’s paw, heard a sound coming from inside the stuffing, and broke down crying.
The grieving father was suddenly taken back to those days and nights at the hospital, laying his head on Dakota’s chest.
