California HS Seniors Defy Social Distancing Orders, Packing Together For Graduation Photo

Graduating from high school is an exciting time. It’s all about celebrating the past while looking ahead to the future. Yet there didn’t seem to be many thoughts of the future from students and families of California’s Lincoln High School in Placer County.

Apparently, families wanted to celebrate the class of 2020 with a sense of normalcy. They organized a group photo to keep with tradition. There’s just one problem. The photo of the more than 100 graduating seniors features them all packed in together, shoulder to shoulder. Not only were social distancing orders shrugged off, but there was not a mask in sight.

Dylan Weaver is a part of that graduating class. He appreciates the gesture and all the people who made it possible. “I thought it was great that the community is coming together to see how they can celebrate us,” he told CBS13.

That said, Dylan was not one of the seniors who participated in the photo. “If they think they are safe enough to be out there, then that is fine by me.”

Lead Placer County health officer Dr. Aimee Sisson said she sympathizes with the students. Still, she believed this was a dangerous move.

“The Class of 2020 has made huge sacrifices. But getting together to take a class photo has the potential to undo all of those sacrifices,” she explained.

“Getting together in a large group, standing shoulder-to-shoulder, without face coverings, is a recipe for virus transmission and a violation of the Governor’s statewide stay-at-home order. I want our residents to understand that the virus is still present in our community, and now is still not the time to gather in person.”

“The pictures recently posted on Facebook of a mass gathering of students in their caps and gowns was not a district-sponsored event, and neither the school district nor Lincoln High School had any influence on the activity,” emphasized Western Placer Unified Superintendent, Scott Leaman.
