The East Troublesome Fire has become the second-largest wildfire in Colorado history. And in the midst of the destruction, a winter storm added to the potential dangers after dropping a foot of snow onto homes that were not prepared for winter weather.
Kyle Frary has been a wildland firefighter for 18 years. In the dark of night, he and his crew were working on putting out fires in homes along U.S. 36 (and by this point the fire had spread at least 170,000 acres) when one family’s house started really going up in flames.
Daniel Stones and his family live in the beautiful two-story home with a big wooden deck and shed. The Stones had already evacuated, but Kyle and his team worked as hard as they could to save the house before it got too hot for them to stay.
But once they felt it was safe, these heroic firemen returned to the Stones’ home to detach the flames from spreading from the deck into the house.
When Daniel returned home, he was amazed that his house was still standing, all thanks to the fire department.
But that wasn’t all he discovered. Daniel was stunned when he found a handwritten note left behind by Kyle — as if saving his house wasn’t enough.
Unbelievably, the note was an apology to Daniel and his family. Watch the video below to see what the note said, and why Daniel was brought to tears.
“It just melts your heart,” Daniel told KDFR. “I’m a grown man and I can admit this, I wept. It was just so touching. It’s been such an emotional roller coaster after the past week and to get something that is not only confirmation but good it’s just so overwhelming.”
