And Just Like That Antisemitic Joke On Holocaust Remembrance Day

“It wasn’t funny and hit pretty badly.”

Well, this week’s episode, “No Strings Attached,” is drawing controversy for including an antisemitic joke that aired on January 27, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day.

It happened during a scene in which Anthony attended dinner at Charlotte’s house with his new date, who responded, “Oh, is this a Jewish dinner?” after Charlotte mentioned challah.

He then said, “You know the Holocaust is a hoax, right?”

@macantone screaming GET OUT! is my new everything. I will be screaming that for everything.😆😂🤣😂 ☠️

Holocaust denial is a gross, antisemitic conspiracy theory that asserts the Holocaust never happened or was exaggerated.

Anthony then screamed, “Get out!”

The episode aired on Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day to “honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides,” according to the Holocaust Museum website.

People were not thrilled with the joke or timing:

The irony that this came out on Holocaust Remembrance Day… it was not planned but how fitting. https://t.co/eclQARTOtt

Did anyone else find the Holocaust comment in this week’s episode of #AJLT to be extremely random and unnecessary? It wasn’t funny, and it hit pretty badly on Holocaust Remembrance Day. I know it wasn’t planned but it was just really, really odd.

However, some people defended and even praised including a moment where a Holocaust denier got shut down.

@macantone this scene really had power. When I moved into my current home 24 years ago my next door neighbor an older lady rang the bell to tell me the holocaust never happened when she saw my menorah in the window on Hanukah. Needless to say we never had a good relationship!

The writers and actors have not responded to the backlash, but we will update you if they do.
