Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi who lived in the 10th century and is known in the West as Azophi is one of the greatest practical Astronomers of the Middle Ages! 🔭🪐

One of his many achievements is that he is known to be the first astronomer ever to describe the ‘Nebulosity’ of the Nebula in Andromeda in one of his books.

His work Kitab Suwar al-kawakib (“The Book of Fixed Stars”), written in 964, included both textual descriptions and illustrations.

He went one step ahead in science in classifying the stars. He divided them into three categories: small, big, and great stars. And this brought more accuracy to his estimations. Moreover, he also identified many other stars which were not done before him.

Al-Sufi’s contributions to astronomy earned him fame and remain the source of inspiration for many who aspire to explore space and the entire universe. Al-Sufi’s astronomical work was subsequently used by many other astronomers as well.

The question is: Have you ever heard of this man before? If not, you now probably know the reason why. He was a Muslim with a turban and beard.
