“Sometimes my parents even let us negotiate on our punishments, instead of just having the classic, ‘That’s not fair!’ ‘Life’s not fair!’ back and forth. Instead, it was, ‘Alright, what do you think would be fairer, then? You still need to be punished to learn, but we want it to feel reasonable to you, too.’ They also kept learning and growing while I did, and were open about anything they thought I might’ve picked up from them that needed working on, too. There was always just this really strong sense that they loved me and saw me as a person first, and a kid second.”
