10-Year-Old Boy Has Beyond Rare Disorder That Caused A Kidney To Grow Inside His Leg

Hamish Robinson was born six weeks prematurely and weighed a mere two pounds. He was released from NICU three weeks later.

Hamish’s mom, Kay, realized he just wasn’t developing properly. For example, he finally said the word “Mama” at 17 months old, only to go silent for the next six years.

Kay and her medical team couldn’t figure out the root cause of Hamish’s seemingly stunted behavioral growth. Then she met with a geneticist who finally unlocked the truth — that her son was bor without the “7p22.1” chromosome.

This chromosome deficiency caused a “structural malformation” which, in turn, caused one of Hamish’s kidneys to grow inside the top of his right thigh! It’s a fully functioning organ in the shape of a horseshoe, but “the chances of a kidney ending up in someone’s leg are practically, if not completely, unheard of until now,” Dr. Andrew Ordon told Inside Edition.

Hamish also suffers from chronic asthma, hearing loss and spinal issues, and he relies on a voice computer to communicate.

But here’s the thing that makes his case so delicate, fascinating and unique: the medical community believes that Hamish, now 10, is the only person on the planet to have this syndrome.
