Actor William Hurt has died at the age of 71.
News of the legendary actor’s death was confirmed by a statement from his son Will, who revealed that Hurt died earlier today.
“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday,” the statement read.
After several years of stage and TV appearances, Hurt made his film debut in the 1980 sci-fi horror film Altered States.
He was nominated for an Oscar four times in his career, and won Best Actor for his performance in 1985’s Kiss of the Spider Woman.
In addition to his decades of acting work in a variety of films, Hurt also played General Thaddeus Ross in MCU films like The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame.
His last film role was in the fantasy film The King’s Daughter, which was released earlier this year.
In 2018, the actor revealed that he had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer that had spread to the bone.
“It’s a moment you only know when it happens to you,” Hurt said of his own diagnosis at the time.
“He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes,” Hurt’s son Will also said in a statement. “The family requests privacy at this time.”
