“He’s 17…why are his pants down?”

Victoria Beckham and David Beckham are facing backlash over their son’s recent photo shoot for i-D magazine, which people have called “inappropriate,” “wrong,” and “cringe,” given his age.

Victoria and David, who’ve been married for more than two decades, share four children. Below, the couple is pictured with their sons Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz Beckham at a movie premiere in London back in 2013.

Cruz recently celebrated his 17th birthday. The personal milestone coincided with a professional one: the release of i-D’s Spring 2022 “Out of Body” issue, which featured Cruz on the cover of a magazine for the first time.

“Big first day as a 17-year-old!” Victoria wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of Cruz posing in his underwear for the magazine cover. “@cruzbeckham for @i_d, so proud.”

Victoria reposted the photo of her son from i-D’s official social media page. The magazine originally shared it alongside a caption that read, “Making his magazine debut with a cover shot by Steven Klein that pays tribute to his father, Cruz Beckham speaks to @i_D about coming of age and working towards his career in music.”

The photo was widely criticized by folks online, many of whom called out both the magazine and Cruz’s parents for permitting a minor to appear in sexualizing images, even if they aimed to imitate some of David’s past underwear campaigns.

“He’s 17…why are his pants down?” one Instagram user commented.

“This is wrong,” another added, while several more described Cruz’s photo as “gross” and “cringe.”

“Coming of age!!!! [He’s] a child of 17,” someone else said.

In addition to pointing out that Cruz must have been 16 when the photo shoot took place, others on Instagram and Twitter noted that his tattoos are visible in i-D’s cover portrait. (In the UK, an underaged person needs parental consent in order to get a tattoo.)

“Why is it socially acceptable for Cruz Beckham to be taking photos in his underwear/grabbing his crotch/clearly showing he has tattoos under age when he was 16 when the photos were taken?!” a Twitter user wrote. “And why is Victoria hyping them? He’s a child.”
