The Battle of Varna, in modern-day Bulgaria, took place on 10 November 1444 near Varna.

The Ottoman Army under Sultan Murad II defeated the Hungarian–Polish and Wallachian armies. It was the final battle of the Crusade of Varna.

The Christians made an elaborate plan for a campaign in 1444. The Venetian and Papal fleets were to cut the Ottomans off from reinforcement from Anatolia.

This would allow a Christian army to destroy their forces in Europe.

But when the crusader army reached Varna, they faced a numerically far superior Ottoman army and they suffered a massive defeat.

This victory allowed the Ottoman Empire to expand its control over the Balkans and opened the way for the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and Serbia.
