Pop Culture Weekly Roundup 2/27/22

It’s Euphoria (finale) Sunday AND SAG Award Sunday, wrapping up a week of hectic pop culture phenomena. Here’s what you may have missed this week:

1.

In a turn of events not even Raven Baxter could have predicted, Queen Elizabeth supposedly “died” after testing positive for COVID-19, according to a tabloid that jumped the gun on reporting the “exclusive” news. Hollywood Unlocked later retracted the post, with a wild article whose headline reads “Fact Check: 10 Reasons We Believed Queen Elizabeth Was Dead.”

2.

Justin Bieber also tested positive for the coronavirus following an “outbreak” within his team. As a result, the singer postponed a Las Vegas performance. “Justin is, of course, hugely disappointed, but the health and safety of his crew and fans is always his number one priority,” a Twitter statement read.

3.

Tom Holland revealed he got “kicked out” of a London pub while bartending for them in preparation for his role in Uncharted. “As word spread around town and people started figuring out that ‘apparently Tom Holland’s bartending at this bar,’ then the general manager started figuring it out,” he explained. Not to worry — he’s been back since, but it’s unlikely to be his go-to unwinding spot.

4.

More on the Tom Holland beat (my favorite kind), in a Part Two of his “Puppies” interview with BuzzFeed, he teased a potential cameo in Euphoria. “I would love to guest star. I would just be an extra — maybe I am and you just don’t know.” While a photoshopped still from the show made the rounds on Twitter, our dreams have yet to come to fruition.

All I ask is one 10-second scene where Maddy dismisses him when he’s just asking for where the bathroom is at Euphoria High during the intermission of Lexi’s play.

5.

Sorry, I lied: One more thing about Tom — and Zendaya! Apparently, after a grueling press day promoting Uncharted while in New York, the actor and top contender for Boyfriend of the Year flew out to Rome (where Z is naturally doing awesome, cool things) for a “surprise date night.” Am I too invested in them? Yes. I realize that. Let me have this.

Britney Spears has signed a $15 million book deal with publisher Simon & Schuster to pen a tell-all memoir. The news comes three months after the termination of her abusive conservatorship and following her public comments about her dislike toward her sister Jamie Lynn’s memoir.

Kelly Clarkson is changing her name to Kelly Brianne, according to a petition she filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court. For the uninitiated, “Brianne” is her middle name. “My new name more fully reflects who I am,” she said of the decision.

Netflix reportedly paid the real Anna Sorokin $320,000 for their portrayal of her story — which detailed how she posed as a fake heiress named Anna Delvey to scam New York’s elite — in Inventing Anna. A report from Insider claims that Anna used most of the money to pay restitution to banks to which she was indebted.

This weekend saw two major awards shows: the NAACP Image Awards and SAG Awards, the latter of which will air tonight. You can check out some of the top looks of the night at the NAACP show here, and browse the must-watch SAG-nominated shows and movies. The ceremonies are some of the biggest of awards show season, leading up to the Oscars (in March) and Grammys (in April).

Priyanka Chopra responded to Rosie O’Donnell’s (half-hearted) TikTok non-apology after the TV personality said she “always assumed” the star was Deepak Chopra’s daughter. In the video, Rosie seemed to learn nothing from the incident, calling Priyanka “someone Chopra” and “the Chopra wife.”

In response, Priyanka wrote, “If you wanted to make a public apology for a very awkward private encounter, I think [it’s] probably best to take the time to Google my name before doing it or even try to reach out directly.”

16.

A Euphoria background actor detailed the “miserable” on-set experience she faced, where filming on the second season’s penultimate episode took “weeks” of 16-hour days to shoot, in a since-deleted TikTok video. “There’s a lot of inconsistencies [in the] background because of it, because obviously people didn’t want to return.”

17.

Lizzo took the news of Melissa McCarthy getting cast as Ursula instead of her in Disney’s upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid in stride. The two ran into each other while at Adele’s concert special, and shared a hilarious moment: Lizzo recalled, “She was like, ‘Well, why the hell did I get the part?’ which is a classic Melissa McCarthy thing to say.”

People’s support for Amanda Bynes poured in following the news that the actor — best known for her roles on the self-titled The Amanda Show and 2000s classic She’s the Man — filed a petition to end her conservatorship. She’s lived under the court-ordered arrangement since 2013.
