“I felt a little excitement, but then the depression came back. ‘She doesn’t want to talk to you,’ said my inner voice. I started to just head inside, but stopped myself. ‘Screw it. Why not?’ I waited at the back of my car. Kim came down the row of cars. She was barefoot carrying her heels. I figured that was a sign. ‘Looks like that margarita needs to be a double?’ She looked up, saw me, smiled, and went, ‘What? Oh…heck yeah!’

We walked in together and took the elevator up. It was summer, hot, and were both always at the pool, so as I got off the elevator at my floor I said, ‘Put your suit on. I’ll be up in 15 minutes, with the worst margarita you’ve ever had. But we’re gonna drink ’em sitting by the pool, so they’ll be great.’ She hesitated for moment, ‘The pool? I just want to lay on the couch.’ ‘You can lay by the pool,’ I countered. ‘Be ready in 15 minutes.’ I changed into my suit, made two margaritas, and mixed up more to bring down with me. I went up to Kim’s apartment and knocked on the door. She answered wearing a stunning bikini. She was gorgeous.

We spent the next four hours sitting by the pool, drinking, talking, and laughing. It was a weekday, and nobody else came down to use it. We ended up spending the whole night together.

I think knowing our relationship wouldn’t be forever helped us keep it casual, yet meaningful. She grew up sheltered and reserved. She was scared to try new things and risk disappointing her pastor father. Her parents were strict Evangelical Christians, and she was to marry someone from her church. I knew that eventually I would move back from the Deep South to the East Coast. I was scarred from the end of my engagement and needed to go somewhere new to feel like there was still life ahead of me.

We told each other our fears, hopes, dreams, and hang-ups, without the fear that it would affect a long-term relationship or might be used against us in the future, since we knew our future wasn’t together. Kim and I had an incredibly fun six-month fling until I moved away. I helped her experiment and try everything she was always afraid to try without fear of judgment. She brought me back out of my shell and helped me start living again.”
