On this day (November 1, 1922 CE), the Ottoman Sultanate was officially abolished by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
The last Sultan Mehmed VI Vahideddin, departed the Ottoman capital, Constantinopole on 17 November 1922.
On 19 November, Crown Prince Abdulmejid was elected caliph by the Turkish National Assembly in Ankara.
He established himself in Istanbul (Constantinople) though the position had no real power.
