It all started when Cameron Newsom’s dentist noticed white spots on her tongue 12 years ago. After some misdiagnoses, Cameron ended up finding out that she had stage four squamous cell carcinoma. She went through chemotherapy to shrink the tumor and eventually had it removed. 

That’s when doctors decided to use part of Cameron’s thigh muscle to replace the missing part of her tongue. 

She said people have been so kind to her since her surgery, “Everyone is so just, like, curious and polite and telling me I’m beautiful, and I’m just like, ’Oh my god. I did not expect that.’”
