“My ex-husband and I were both the exact same rank as we progressed through our military careers. He deployed numerous times, and I was on my own with three very young children. I handled the daycare schedule, doctor appointments, maintaining the household, and more as an Officer. My annual evaluation was good because I had done a good job and they could not write anything otherwise. However, the speech that accompanied the eval regarding making sure I kept on top of priorities was infuriating.”

“When the kids were a little older, my time came up to deploy. My husband had a full-time live-in helper to assist with the kids while I was gone. He was no kidding praised daily for his grand parenting heroics, even though he did not take the kids to/from school, deal with any doctor appts, etc. Not once. He didn’t even buy groceries and rarely managed the bathtime routine. When it came time for his yearly evaluation, his superior officer wrote in his permanent professional military write-up that he was a far superior Officer because not only did he do his job, but he also took care of his three children while his wife was deployed. The double standard was sickening.”
