The cheetah is Africa’s most endangered cat. According to Jim Andelin, owner of Virginia’s Metro Richmond Zoo, the wild cheetah population has dramatically declined from 100,000 to only 7,000.

This staggering statistic is precisely why the Metro Richmond Zoo has had a strong focus on cheetah conservation. In the past several years, the staff has seen nine new litters totally 47 cubs.

The average size of a cheetah litter is about three to four cubs. But in an exceptionally rare birth, a pregnant cheetah named Vaila recently gave birth to seven babies at Metro Richmond Zoo.

This was Vaila’s second pregnancy while her partner, Kalu, is a first-time dad.

Vaila’s litter marks a huge step forward in cheetah conservation. Not only that, but septuplets among cheetahs only happens one percent of the time!

But the story surrounding this incredible mother only gets better… because as it turns out, this wasn’t the first time she blessed the zoo with multiples.

In 2016, Vaila delivered her first set of adorable cubs: a litter of, you guessed it, lucky number seven.
