Having a pool comes with a huge list of pros and cons. Pro, it may be a nice way to relax in the summer. Con, they’re somewhat of a hazard. Also, a horse might fall into one.
That’s exactly what happened in Sonoma County, California. The visual may seem a bit ridiculous, but just imagine what that poor horse must have been feeling. Firefighters had to cut away from the deck in order to successfully free the horse. The horse, named Spirit, found its way into the pool at night. The owner of the home, Katy Poteracke, says she heard a loud thud right before her dog started barking. Obviously, something went wrong. She likely had no clue that her pet horse fell into her pool.
So, how did it happen? The horse initially walked on the pool cover and fell right in. The pool wasn’t heated, and the horse didn’t have any way to climb out. Panicked over what to do, Katy realized that the only thing she could do was call 911.
While Spirit was a bit shaken and cold when leaving the pool, she ended up being okay. It’s a reminder that when you have a pool, you don’t know what to expect. Katy probably didn’t figure that her horse would wander over there. Otherwise, she may have invested in a stronger pool cover. That, or put a fence around the area that Spirit knows to avoid.
