For many parents, the holidays are a really tough time of year. In addition to providing for their families’ usual needs, they also feel the pressure to provide gifts and presents for the holidays.

Many struggling moms and dads cut back on their own necessities just to make the holidays special for their children.

Luckily, some people recognize how difficult the holidays can be — and they want to help. For the tenth year, Amber Patch-Troxell has brought holiday joy to hundreds of children in Kewanee, Illinois. Her organization, Patchy’s Toy Drive, honors her late brother, who died in Afghanistan.

Amber told WQAD, “It’s in memory of my brother who was killed in Afghanistan. He loved kids and he didn’t get to have any kids, so this is my way of giving back to the community. I always tell people that these are all his kids.”

By partnering with the Salvation Army, Patchy’s Toy Drive is able to provide bags full of holiday gifts to families in need. And they don’t just give out toys! The bags are also filled with clothes, books, and other items the families might need. This year, they were able to give out 800 bags of goodies.

“I don’t want kids to go without for Christmas,” explained Amber. “I couldn’t imagine thinking of a child not having anything to open on Christmas morning.”

Although her brother isn’t around to see the impact he’s having on hundreds of kids, there’s no doubt he’d be proud of the way Amber is honoring his memory.
