Ashley D’Silva, 29, normally spends her days working in the beauty industry, not in pet rescue. But when she heard about animals left helpless after their owners fled from a flood, she knew she had to take action.

The state of Queensland, Australia recently suffered from catastrophic floods. Many residents had no choice but to flee the encroaching waters with little notice. Sadly, some pet owners neglected to take their dogs with them.

“Being an animal lover, I knew I had to do something to help all the poor animals left to fend for themselves,” Ashley told reporters.

“I made a plea on a Facebook flood relief page if anyone needed help, and I was overwhelmed with the response.”

Ashley, her husband, and some friends waded through the waist-deep waters to rescue abandoned dogs and cats. They rescued a total of nine dogs, three cats, and eleven humans fro the flood.

“It wasn’t easy considering the roads had turned into flooding channels of water so following GPS was almost impossible.”

She’d also heard reports of snakes and crocodiles in the floodwaters. Luckily, she and the other rescuers didn’t encounter any reptiles during their rescue efforts.

Though it was difficult, Ashley says reuniting these animals with their owners was “the best feeling in the world.”
