Every year during the holidays, people like to support the less fortunate in their communities. Some people donate canned goods, others host clothing drives, and some participate in toy drives.
One woman, Maria McKeon, decided to help some kids in her community by “adopting” their family. What this means is that Maria would be in charge of gifts for the four children, ages 3, 5, 10, and a newborn.
Maria had bought a number of gifts for the children when the unthinkable happened — someone broke into her home and stole all the presents.
The man responsible for stealing the gifts was caught on camera, and many are now referring to him as “the Grinch.”
Maria was heartbroken. She really wanted the children she “adopted” to have a good Christmas, but now it was ruined. That’s when the community stepped in to help.
“Something Simple Café offered to do a fundraiser for me, and I asked them to do it to benefit these four kids that I was helping out, and they did, and the whole town has come out to Something Simple Café and brought gifts nonstop,” Maria explained. “I was here once already and filled up my car with so many donations that I’ve now come back, and they’ve told me it filled up again.”
The response to Maria’s “Grinch” situation has been overwhelming — people from all over have donated toys and money for the children.
