Manchester City did not secure a Champions League title last season, nor did Pep Guardiola and company secure the signing of Lionel Messi (despite the rumors). New players Nathan Aké and Ferran Torres will help bolster the Cityzens in another quest for European glory. But it’s not the same as adding who many consider to be the greatest player in the history of the game.

Man City 2019-20 season in review

Man City lost the league by 18 points last season after winning it by one point the year before. Liverpool was on a different level in 2019-20, going unbeaten for 27 games, while City lost nine games in total and finished on 81 points.

Many journalists reported on Lionel Messi’s intent to join City for three years, and join City Football Group’s New York City FC after that. But the Barcelona board and La Liga brass wouldn’t budge on Messi’s reported release clause, so the Argentine will stay for at least one more year.

With the players at Pep’s disposal, there isn’t much to do to improve besides signing a legend like Messi; City must make up the difference on Liverpool through coaching alone. Losing nine games was unacceptable considering the club’s resources and squad, and Pep knows that better than anyone. Guardiola will get back to his basic philosophies and get City back to the consistent machine it was from 2017-2019 through intense training, and with luck City may be able to pry the title right back from the Reds.

Preview: Stream Man City at Wolves

Man City did not play in week one, with the match against Aston Villa being postponed due to the Cityzens participation in the UCL in August.

For the first match this season Pep and company will take on Wolves, a defensively stout team with young and exciting prospects all over the field. El Tri superstar Raúl Jiménez scored 17 goals last campaign, and will be a factor in a game where goals might count a little more than usual.
