Mary Colby was happily married to her husband Mark for 44 years. Mark was a talented jazz player and teacher, and also a loving family man.

Mark passed away in August 2020 at the age of 71, leaving Mary a heartbroken widow.

“He earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in music from the University of Miami, and then was hired for extended stints in the bands of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and pianist Bob James,” his obituary reads.

Among the other musicians with whom Colby performed during his lengthy career are Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Charlie Haden, Jaco Pastorius, Doc Severinsen, Frank Sinatra, Ira Sullivan and Sarah Vaughan.

In the midst of her grief, Mary decided to send three urns containing his remains to three different people: Mark’s son who lives in Georgia, his sister who lives in Florida, and his best friend since childhood, who lives in New York.

Mary paid $36 to get the third urn to New York by the next day, and she received a money-back guarantee on her purchase.

While the first two urns made it safely to their destination, the urn meant for New York City somehow got lost in the mail.

It’s the last thing she wanted to deal with while still mourning Mark.

The Colby family was so distraught, thinking their beloved father’s remains were somewhere lost in the world, and they felt totally helpless.

So, they reached out to the investigative team at CBS 2, hoping to spread the word and get some answers.

Watch the video below to see how the story resolved itself, with a pleasant surprise just as the CBS reporter went to interview Mary for their story.
